In The Lion King, Mufasa took it upon himself to teach Simba about the responsibilities of being king.

Death

"Long Live the King."

Mufasa was robbed of his life by his jealous brother Scar, who wished for nothing else but to be king himself. Scar lured Simba to the Gorge and told him to wait there, saying that his father had a surprise for him. As Scar left, he motioned to the Hyenas to scare the wildebeests into running down to the Gorge. He ran to tell Mufasa of Simba's plight, ensuring that Mufasa would go down to rescue his son. Mufasa managed to save Simba, but as he was climbing up a cliff, he was grabbed by Scar. Scar dug his claws into Mufasa's paws, uttered the words "Long live the king", and threw Mufasa down into the gorge to his death. Simba, who didn't see the event, was shocked to find his father dead. Scar told the cub that if it hadn't been for him, Mufasa would still be alive. He also scared Simba with wondering over what his mother Sarabi would say. Scar told Simba to run away and never return, and Simba did so.

Afterlife

Mufasa made another appearance to Simba. When Simba was still living in the jungle with Timon and Pumbaa, Mufasa appeared in swirling clouds and reminded his son not to forget who he was, hinting for him to go back to the Pridelands. Simba took this lesson to heart (after some extra guidance from Rafiki), and returned to the Pride Lands to fight his uncle Scar.

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride

In Simba's Pride, Mufasa made several appereances as a ghost watching from the sky. He was there when the movie began, smiling down at his son and granddaughter. Towards the middle of the movie, when Rafiki had trouble deciding over Kovu 's fate, Mufasa assured him (by causing a gust of wind to knock a gourd onto the floor) that Kiara and Kovu are meant to be together. At the end of the film, Mufasa's voice is heard booming down from the clouds, congratulating his son.
