Converting and Resizing
From TLKFAAwiki
Pictures that you upload into your TLKFAA artist account should be in JPEG, GIF or PNG format, and they shouldn't be larger than about 1000 pixels wide or tall except in special circumstances and they shouldn't exceed about 250 KB. This helps to conserve my server's bandwidth as well as making it take less time for users to download the pictures, and it ensures that the pictures will fit visually within the browser window without having to be scaled down using Internet Explorer's ugly auto-scaling mechanism.
Newcomers to the world of digital art, however, might not know how to make their pictures conform to these standards. Scanner software often outputs pictures that are about 1700 pixels wide, and many artists simply upload these pictures at that size without taking the time to scale them down first. Similarly, many artists are unfamiliar with the techniques necessary for making their JPEG images turn out looking nice without taking up huge amounts of disk space. This page aims to explain some of the techniques for doing these things.
Scaling Down Your Scanned Pictures
This is a tutorial for Windows XP users. To make your pictures smaller, you must go to My Computer, or whereever your scanned image is. Click on it, and see it. Right-click on it it and press Edit. It will take you to MS Paint, where you can make it smaller without changing it's size. If it is still to big, stay in MS Paint. Left-click on Edit and Left-click on Select All. Then, Right-click your picture and press Copy. Paste it in MS Word and you can resize it nicely. Then, when you are satisfied with the results, go into MS Paint, but don't exit out of MS Word. When you are in MS Paint, Left-click Image. Then Left-click Attributes. Put 1 x 1 pixels. Left-click OK. Then Left-click on Edit. Left-click on Paste. Now save it, and you've got a scaled down scanned picture! :) Hope it helps!
www.Photobucket.com also automatically scales down images to 800x600 when you upload it. To use this method- upload the image to photo bucket and re-save it to your computer once the image has been uploaded, then upload it to TLKFAA at a decent size.
Converting Between Image Formats
If you're unsure of what image formats are, please read the Image Formats page, and then return here.
Converting between image formats is very simple, depending on how you are doing it. Before you get laid off, if you are a Mac user, this is not the tutorial for you. It is for Windows users.
For People Who Don't Have A Image Converting Tool:
Don't worry! Just use MS Paint! If you want or need to save the picture in another format, then open up the picture. Left-click File the Left-click Save As. There, just pick the right format for your needs, save it, and you are done! :)
For People Who Have Powerdesk (because that is the only converter I have):
Just Right-click on the thumbnail of the picture, hover over to Powerdesk, and Left-click Convert Picture File. Then pic the file you want to convert it to, and your done! As simple as that! Hope this tutorial helped! :)
For Mac users, changing the format of an image couldnt be easier.
-Simply open up the image you want to convert in Preview (which should be the default program it opens with anyway. If not, press Ctrl+click over the image, go to 'open with' and find 'Preview' on the list.) -Once the image is open, go to the file menu, click 'save as' and a pop-up box will appear. Simply click the drop down box to choose which format you want to save it as. -Drag the slider tool to the right for better quality pictures or to the left for lesser quality pictures. Keep in mind that the higher quality the image, the bigger the file size is. -choose where you want to save it and when you click 'save', Preview will convert the image into your chosen format. Easy as that. ^^
