Um…Kiara is happy.

*I first heard this song (yes, this is the entire song, all 27 seconds of it) on the Dr. Demento Show, and I just recently came up with this animation idea that wouldn’t go away. I’m don’t think I’m going to complete this, since this alone took me two days and it’s getting harder and harder for me to finish large projects.

My first music video, starring Monah, as she recalls the close friendship she had with Zira before it came to a painful end.

Music: Excerpt from "Toy Soldiers", by Martika, one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. The lyrics seem to fit Monah's emotions.

Thank goodness I was able to shrink this down to a reasonable size!

Another animation with sound. I had a pretty hard time trying to sync the sounds with the events in Flash.

Tanabi and Vitani sharing a peaceful night under the stars. Just another crazy idea that revolved around linking one of William Hall’s lines with an appropriate (yet fitting) event.

Note: This movie is larger than its original size, and it plays better if it is resized to about 75%.

Edit: That sound near the end is a record being scratched, capishe?

(Yep, this is the big one...)

History does tend to repeat itself in the TLK saga, doesn't it? Here, Tanabi meets a certain reptile, but takes a different approach than his father did. (voice by William Hall, as usual)

This animation took me nearly a month to make. Twenty-something days to make less than a 1/2-minute of animation. "What you put into your kettle comes out into your spoon."

Yet another Flash animation. Unlike my others, this one is very rough, and it’ll stay that way. Sorry.

A while ago, I realized that the protagonist of one of my favorite obsolete games had the same voice actor that provided Simba’s singing voice in SP, and I was determined to create a loose crossover. Most of these voices are from a series of hilarious “outtakes” at the end of the game.

Yep, it's another animation with sound that I spent way too much time on!

Kiara and Tanabi having one of their typical cubhood spats...

The exchange is a little awkward, and I added subtitles for people who can't make out what's being said. Tanabi's "turn" was so difficult that I had to put his foreparts, his hind feet and his tail on seperate layers to make things easier!

I had some serious moral issues while making this animation. I love ZBS, so making an animation using their material is probably not the best idea, but ZBS is woefully underrated, so I can only hope that by making this, I can do a bit of free advertising for them, hence the shameless pluggery in the final frame. It’s for a good cause.

Anyway, it’s Nani, with the best voice I could find for her, plus a random shaman/advisor bird that I whipped up without much planning.

EDIT: Higher quality sound byte added.

On this archive, I've seen prehistoric versions of the TLK characters as well as South American and European versions. However, I don't think I've ever seen any North American versions...so here is The Mountain Lion King.

Naturally, Simba and Co. are mountain lions, Zazu is a roadrunner, the hyenas are coyotes (I didn't realize the resemblance to the famous Warner Brothers duo until later), Rafiki is a raccoon, Timon is a black-tailed prairie dog and Pumbaa is a white-collared peccary. This version of the story takes place in a semi-desert habitat in Arizona, and Rafiki has a prickly pear fruit, a hawk's feather and a turquoise tied to his stick.

And hey, just in time for Brian Day!

I had a flash of inspiration listening to some of William Hall's lines from Space Quest 6, and this is the end result. (better version at DeviantArt.)

A few months ago, I started thinking about yet another alternate TLK universe, one where the cub at the end of TLK wasn't Kiara or Kiara's brother…

…but her SISTER.

Things took off from there, and now, after all this time, I've got a four-page comic to show for my efforts. I'll be releasing one page per week, ending just before Christmas.

Note: this strip was meant to be a joke. As in, something that is not meant to be serious. So don't try to make sense out of it, because it is merely meant to be funny, nothing more. (I should never spend multiple weeks working on something like this…)

There are two vastly different canon explanations for Zazu's origin as the king's majordomo. Inconsequential, but certainly enough to really ruin an emotional moment like this.

(I tweaked Zazu's design very slightly to make him look a tiny bit more like a real hornbill, particularly around the head.)

A young Rafiki gets caught in the act behind Pride Rock. Remember, kids: graffiti is bad.

Accidentally worked a little dynamic element into this drawing: the three characters on the left form a triangle that points towards the fourth character, directing the viewer's eye towards the right.

The lion is Mohatu, whose mate is Winda (from Pridelands: Generations), who I've drawn before. The other mandrill is some nameless non-canon dude, meant to be either Rafiki's tutor or his predecessor.

Another little “flashback” picture. To Monah, Nani not only resembles Zira physically, but also embodies the playfulness and innocence that Zira had when she and Monah were true friends before she met Scar (also, before she became known as “Zira”. A couple of fanfics have her starting out good and having a different name, which is used in this picture).

Expanding on a previous idea: After the selfish lion was driven out of the Pridelands, he lived a hard life on the land's borders in the company of a female outcast. Their situation became even worse with the arrival of Uru, but "Selfish" refused to beg for mercy from Mohatu, thinking that the king would never do such a thing after the troubles "Selfish" caused him.

Ahadi met Uru as a cub and they became friends, meeting in secret as they matured. When their parents eventually catch them together, Mohatu grows angry with "Selfish" and he orders him and his family out of the Pridelands, but Ahadi intervenes, and not wanting to tarnish his father's otherwise pristine image, he leaves this little historical detail out of Mohatu's story. ;)

I'm currently working on about three large art-related projects, and my motivation to work on any of them was running a bit low. Then suddenly, I was inspired to do one of my rare "group surprise" pictures.

A lot of characters have named "Shani" have been popping up lately, and I decided to draw most of the Shanis I found on the archive as cubs (However, I only included ones that were female and had some connection to canon characters). All the artists' names appear next to their versions of Shani, as well as descriptions of how that Shani fits into the TLK universe. I even included the "original" Shani as she appeared in the early Simba's Pride storyboards.

I started thinking how I'm always painting Monah as a tragic figure with an angsty past, troubled present and not much of a future. Then I realized that even for someone like her, there has to be some spark of light in her life that makes her want to keep living...

I spent far too long on this thing. Realism just ain't worth the effort for me. I'd hoped I'd have this picture finished by Christmas...oh well. As long as I'm uploading it now, I might as well post a link to the comic I did to honor that time of the year (it is on-topic, surprisingly).

The climax of the battle at the end of SP in the “Kopa Universe”. When Kiara and Kovu stop the battle, Kopa’s previously hidden anger boils to the surface, making Simba realize what impact his words had on his son so long ago. In this scenario, Simba isn’t the supreme meanie, since his son has a good amount of pointless prejudice towards the Outsiders as well.

This has to be one of the only depictions of actual scenes from TLK I’ve ever done.

When Mufasa snatches Simba out of the stampede and places him on the rock ledge, there’s a brief, barely perceptible moment when they look at each other, right before Mufasa is swept back into the herd…and I thought, “That’s the last time that Simba looked into his father’s eyes.”

And so I drew this.

Here are most of the Chakas of TLKFAA, a follow-up to the "multiple Shanis" picture. Similarly to the Shanis picture, only Chakas in some way related to canon characters are included. 6 Shanis and 6 Chakas are described as offspring of Kiara and Kovu, while 8 of the Shanis and 13 of the Chakas are designated as Simba and Nala's cubs.

Note: Chaka was Kiara/Shani's brother, who was cut from SP in its early stages. There are no "official" sketches of him, unlike Shani.

Also, I wasn't sure about the parents of Ukuelukile's Chaka, but I assumed they were Simba and Nala. EDIT: And it turns out that they are.

Back in the 80's, Hasbro (creators of "My Little Pony") came out with a small menagerie of animals dubbed Pony Friends, among which was a lion named Kingsley.

Hasbro said Kingsley was a girl, even though s/he had a mane. S/he also had a tail that looked much more like a horse's than a lion's.

In light of this, I'd say Kingsley has a good reason to be distraught.

Disney's Active Play: Simba's Pride features a number of lion cubs and their mothers. The cubs have designs that throw the TLK design "rules" right out the window: None of them have whiskers and some don't even have different colored fur around their eyes -- and their moms' designs break the rules even more!

Though Simba's generation is packed full of semi-canon cubs, Kiara's only has four cubs, all from TLK6NA. Even though this game seems to take place in a strange alternate universe where everyone is perfectly fine with letting Kovu and Kiara play together, I think it's neat to finally find some more cubs Kiara's age.

Many, many thanks to Takashari for helping me obtain screenshots and DJ Coulz for making me aware of this game.

"Look, Uru -- the golden one looks just like you."
"And the dark one looks just like you."
"He's got your nose, though."

I decided to draw the quintessential pre-TLK family portrait in order to further my mission to destroy the misconception that Ahadi is described as having golden fur in TLK:6NA. ;)

And yes, I've changed Uru's design yet again. I'm not sure if her father could still be "the selfish lion" in this scenario, since it might mean that her mom was also golden with an Outlander nose, unless she got one or both of those traits from a grandparent. Maybe I should've given her a normal nose and had Taka's nose be inherited from his maternal grandmother, but ah well.

I tried to combine every physical trait displayed on canon/semi-canon lion characters into one individual. I'm sure I overlooked a few and gotten some of them wrong, but this is the majority.

Some of these traits are common on fan characters (head tufts, elbow tufts, dorsal stripes), but some are rare (toe color surrounding the paw pad, tiny pupils, atypical eye shapes). If I'm given a textual description of an art request, sometimes I slip in some of these more subtle traits to make the characters a bit more distinctive. Even a plain character can be made into a unique one by giving it a few of these traits. Don't be afraid to try them.

I suppose an "experiment" like this is rather timely, with February 12th being Darwin Day.

Sketches of all the major TLK characters as African birds with the exception of Zazu, whom I didn’t include, since a bird with a bird advisor seems…well, redundant. I was thinking of making him into a bat, but I eventually dropped that concept.

Zazu is a pretty stylised bird. It's hard to tell what species of hornbill he's based on (some have speculated that he's a yellow-billed).

I decided to take this a step further. I took several species of African hornbills and stylised them to fit the TLK hornbill "mold". Like Zazu, I made them slightly more colorful than their real-life models.

Cub Nala shows a young zebra who's the boss...or at least tries to. (I accidentally made this zebra quite a handsome one, as well as carrying my "use-blue-instead-of-gray-for-outlining-white-objects" theme a little too far).

This probably hasn't been done before...and with good reason, it's a bit twisted...Simba and Nala...with a slightly different look...well, I've seen a male Vitani and a female Scar, and, well...you figure it out.

*It's old, but perfect for this contest!

Tanabi's disturbing identity crisis (for those of you that don't know, Kopa is Simba's son in The Lion King: Six New Adventures stories).

A complex, computer data type comparison between the cub at the end of TLK and the one at the beginning of SP with interesting conclusions!

A wee bit of satire and irony inspired by some discussions on Lilymud.

(Remember, having your own personal theories about the characters in TLK [or any fandom] is just fine. However, claiming those theories to be fact and telling anyone who thinks otherwise that they are idiots makes you look like an immature jerk.)

Something for the Character Development for Non-Lions contest (where the rules ask for at least 1 non-lion character from the TLK books or movies, and what gets submitted? Non-African species, original characters and…lions! *sigh…*)

Anyway, it’s the two ostriches from IJCWTBK arguing over whether giving these cubs a ride is a good idea. I used to think that Simba’s bird was a female and the other was a male, but now I think they’re both male with slightly different colors.

A request from someone outside the archive: Scar gazing contentedly at Kovu after choosing him to be his successor (insert obligatory rant about how this scene doesn't make sense, since Kovu and Kiara seem to be the same age and lion cubs grow so quickly, Disney has no regard for continuity, etc., etc.)

A continuation of SimbaLeopard.jpg. What if Simba didn't do what Pumbaa advised in that scene? Sometime afterwards, something like this might've resulted...

Here's the new design for adult Kizazi...Slightly tweaked colors, and he now he has a lighter "fringe" on his nose like his dad does. I also gave him eyes shaped like his grandma's eyes (see if you can figure it out ;) )

Some sketches of Vitani – because she has the greatest facial expressions.

Kiara meets some new birdies...the birdies that eat anything as long as it's dead (and preferably rotten).

These two guys were a lot of fun to draw. Full-size version of this comic at DeviantART.

A somewhat large step against the Kimba vs. Simba wars...Simba's (unofficial) son (Tanabi) and...er...Kimba's son (Lune) together, with the former asking a very thought-provoking question...

A very large picture "promoting" a dying genre of computer games that deserves to be saved -- Adventure! Here, the entire cast of SP (and then some) is enjoying the King's Quest Series (by Sierra OnLine).

Scar talks about what he thinks about all the scarred lions that run amuck! All the characters are copyright their creators EXCEPT the one in the top right-hand corner. This little fellow is Kishimonne, my own creation.

I wanted to try something a bit more minimalist and challenging. I used only four layers and didn't use any filters or tweak the colors in any way. The filename is a line from Glass Tiger's "I Will Be There".
