I use Photoshop Elements 5.0 ^_^
edit: well it came with my tablet when i got it xD but if you know your program then you can still do great things with GIMP and 1.0...just keep it up ^_^
edit2: also keep in mind that i don't have a tablet at the moment ( broken :[ ) so you also don't need fancy equipment to make pretty arts... all you need is motivation, like you say.

Edit2: C: H'ok well, the whole banner together should be 120 pixels by 600, so either draw a pic in that size range or just resize/crop an existing pic you'd like to use... once you have this you need to copy and paste 5 versions of the banner pic into a folder, then crop the first one to 120 by 120 (this is the easy one), for the next i crop from the left side till its 480 in length then crop from the right until its 120 by 120 ^_^ then do this for each of the 3 that are left (minus 120 from the last number you had... so that's 360 from left for the next, then 240, then 120)
..i hope that made sense, and helped xD
