Simba's age; his mother fled the pridelands when she realized she was pregnant with Scar's son. Rhadi returns years later as a wanderer, knowing nothing of where he came from.

Name means "forgiveness" in Swahili.

Son of Scar and Sarabi, born before Kopa (end of TLK). A rather mischevious cub who gets into trouble (he's already torn up his ears) to the chagrin of his mother, who wants him to be accepted and fit into the pride. Regarded with a bit of a grudge by Simba because he is Scar's son.

Tarsy was found at the side of his dead mother as an infant by pridelanders. She had died from some disease, and it was feared her young son had it as well. However, apparently the ailment of the mother was not contagious, for the young Tarsy thrived under the care of a lioness who had recently lost her cub (This same lioness would become the mother of Radhi later.) Tarsy is older than Simba, a cub at the time of his birth. As Tarsy gets older he often disappears from Pride Rock for days at a time, which Mufasa accepts as teenage restlessness.

Tarsy grows to young adulthood under Scar's reign as a very cunning individual. He takes pride in how he can talk his way out of anything he doesn't want to do. Everyone in the pride is quite cautious of him, fearing that one day Scar will be a big enough influence that Tarsy will carry out any plan given to him by his idol. He also grew up under the guidance of Tayu, Scar's second-in-command.

When Scar begins mentoring Tarsy after Tayu's betrayal and subsequent death, Zira is infuriated. She planned for Scar's patronage of her healthy son by Tayu, Kovu. Tarsy's training places him higher than her son. Before Tarsy truly becomes Scar's second, he is fatally wounded on a hunt Zira and her allies were also participating in, conveniently freeing Kovu to be named Scar's heir.

Brother to Tayu and thus Kovu's uncle. They were from the same litter, but Tayu has always been smaller than his more confident brother. Both of the brothers have their mother's brown coloring, an outlander-type lioness, but Tau looks a bit more like their father, a golden-furred, black-maned lion with bright blue eyes.

Kovu's father. Cornered by hyenas while passing through the barren Pridelands, and offered a deal by Scar: join the pride as his enforcer or face death by hyena-munching. Tayu naturally accepts Scar's offer and becomes co-leader, moderating the lionesses. Near the end of Scar's reign he has a relationship with Zira, result being Kovu and Vitani. Eventually tries to kill Scar to take over the pride, but is tricked into falling into a deep crevasse, where he dies from the fall.

Friend of Rovias; another of Scar's cubs from the days when he ruled the pride. Very sly, he always knows how to get what he wants. Is cast out of the pride as a teenager with Zira and her outlanders.

This group consists of my characters who live in a forest or jungle habitat. There are two main lion prides, the Kagiso Jungle pride and the Masamba Forest pride. Both of these prides have complexions different from savannah lions, consisting mostly of main coats of browns and reddish browns. Males have lighter manes from light brown to golden yellow. The jungle pride lions also have markings that resemble those of other big cats, such as tiger stripes or leopard spots.

A wily trickster of the jungle.

Head lioness of the Masamba Forest pride and mother of Zuna. Founded the pride with her childhood friend and father of Zuna, Zylan.

A royal python who has an unusual taste for little lion cubs...muahaha. Can be quite the persuasive speaker. Nearly eats little Kasim when he wanders off on his own in the jungle.

Forest lioness who falls in love with Kasim, leader of the Kalliel outlanders. Princess of the forest pride, hence her ear decoration.

Founder of the Masamba Forest Pride and father of Zuna. He is very popular with the creatures of the forest because he only hunts for food on the savannah.

A group of males that live together in the outlands of the area inhabited by the Kalliel pride. Ages range from mature adults to older cubs. Led by the jungle lion Kasim.

Brother to Dart. Very bold and adventurous, troublemaker of the Kalliel outlanders.

Son of Dash. Wants to be just like his father when he grows up, and indeed, he is already acting like a miniature version.

Leader of a group of male outlanders that prowls around the Kalliel pride's borders. He's the big moderator of the boys, trying to keep them together rather than having them break apart into little factions. Sometimes he thinks about taking over the Kalliel pride, because its leader is old and there aren't any other adult males to challenge him.

Originally came from the deep jungle, specifically the Kagiso Jungle pride, where he was cast out when he grew to adulthood by his own father. Traditionally he would have been the prince of his pride, but the jungle lions did not believe in such ways.

Pride of lions led by the gray lion Kalliel. A large family group, with Kalliel the only adult male, although he has two teenage sons he allows to stay around. Other males in the area are banished to the outlands.

Bakali is the youngest of Kalliel's offspring, a little blue-gray girl who is very curious and often gets into trouble for it.

When Falern's mother joined the pride, she was pregnant, and gave birth soon after. Falern was the result, and quickly became a favorite friend of Traien, Kalliel's son. Falern has the unsettling habit of observing and watching, saying nothing for long periods of time, able to stay absolutely still indefinitely. Although this troubles some of the pride, it is fine with Traien, who is rather shy himself and not much for conversation. When Falern does say something, it's usually worth listening to.

Kalliel is the leader of his own pride, and the father of Traien. The role was suddenly thrust upon him when the last lead male died in a failed hunt, as Kalliel was the only other adult male in the pride at the time and the former leader had no living offspring.

He leaves most of the leadership up to the older lionesses, who know how to manage a pride and have more experience, but he is trying his best to learn how things are managed.

Here's my first original character, a clever girl with light-colored fur and a stripe down her back. She is a member of Kalliel's pride. Kazya adores puzzles and solving problems. However, she has the bad habit of never being able to sit still for more than a few minutes, so she solves most of her puzzles on the run. Her mother had a low status in her pride, but Kazya's wits have allowed her fame to soar among the pride's younger members.

Rasa is an adolescent lioness and a member of the Kalliel pride. She is the explorer of the bunch, always out adventuring when she should be hunting. Rasa has reddish coloring with freckles. She also has a bird's feather woven into her tail tuft. Her parentage is unknown, as she was found as a young cub alone in the midst of a parrot colony. Her coloring suggests that her parents may have been forest lions, and certainly shows that she is not from Kalliel's area, as the more common colors there are grays, golds, and beiges.

Shey is Kalliel's one-time mate and Traien's mother. She and Kalliel were childhood sweethearts, but after Traien was born the relationship waned. However, Shey does help guide Kalliel and assume the role of the head lioness when he is suddenly thrust into leadership, and they remain good friends.

Sienna was originally an outsider before she joined the Kalliel pride. During her outsider days, she loved to fight, earning her many permanent scars as tokens of her experience. She eventually left when they acknowledged her as their leader, which she despised.

Sienna was accepted into the Kalliel pride after a severe drought, in which many of the pride's members died from hunger. Since then, she has made hunting rather than fighting her new specialty, and is valued for her skills in taking down prey. She has no plans for returning to her former companions, and she takes great pleasure in fighting them off when they intrude into Kalliel's lands.

Traien is Kalliel's adolescent son, and the next in line for leadership of the pride. He was shocked when his father got the role unexpectedly, and is deathly afraid of having to lead someday.

Varsam is the nephew of the deceased former leader of the pride that Kalliel took over. He felt that he should be the one to rule next because he was a blood relation, but got a paw to the face to make him back down. Now he bears a nasty scar and a lot of resentment for Kalliel and his family.

Eldest daughter of pride leader Kalliel and the blue lioness Wynn; littermate to Xavien. Winter is a very ambitious girl who dreams about being the head lioness of a pride--if they right guy comes along, of course!

Kalliel's current favorite lioness and mother to three of his cubs: Xavien, Winter, and Bakali. She is a soft blue-gray color.

This is Xavien, Kalliel's second son. His mother is Wynn, and Bakali is his little sister. He's a pretty easy-going guy, and not too concerned about not being next in line for the leadership of the pride. He never expected to be, and is fine with letting his nervous half-brother deal with it.

He loves hanging around with the cubs of the pride, especially his little sister Bakali. He isn't looking forward to setting out on his own one day, and hopes his brother Traien will let him hang around with the pride.

Son of Kalliel and littermate of Kazya. Loathes Varsam and harbors dreams of ruling the pride one day. A loner.

Jivu is the next in line for the throne of the Weupe Kingdom; however, he is faced with a vengeful older brother named Zimwi who wants him out of the picture. He has a littermate-brother named Ukali.

["Jivu" = Ash]

Father of Kalliel. He is born into the Weupe Kingdom, where he was third in line for the throne. He runs away as a teenager after his older brother, Zimwi, tries to kill him.

Zimwi is actually of the Weupe Kingdom, a region ruled by royal gray lions. Zimwi is the oldest son of a ruling king, but he is passed over and has to watch as the kingship is promised to his younger brother Jivu. Zimwi therefore plots as a teen to eliminate both Jivu and his brother from the same litter, Ukali (Ukali eventually becomes the father of Kalliel). He has a rather mean disposition, probably why he was not given the kingship in the first place.

["Zimwi" = Demon]

A lion pride consisting of various mated couples under the leadership of a barren male that live in Zaire. They have markings similar to those of domestic horses.

Born with a serious birth defect, he cannot truly see but can only distinguish shades of light.

Son of Breeze and Tirna. He has the grace and flexibility of his mother along with the agility and speed of his father. Very active little cub.

Chestnut-colored mate of Breeze. She loves to dance with freedom of movement, running and leaping and spinning.

This pride is actually just one small family that lives together at the foot of the Loma Mountains in Africa. Dazzy, the tricolored lion is the father and leader, Whisper is his mate, and they had four children: Wiskan, Hazen, Andrea, and Danso. The Loma Pride refers to that family unit.

First son of Dazzy and Whisper.

Daughter of Dazzy and Whisper, littermate to Danso.

Youngest son of Dazzy and Whisper, littermate to Andrea.

Leader of a small pride that lives in the shadow of the Loma Mountains.

Second son of Dazzy and Whisper; sort of a brooding genius who thinks things through before saying anything.

Mate of Dazzy, tends to be on the quiet side. Is a bit intimidated by larger animals.

This pride is made entirely of melanistic lions (melanin is a pigment that makes a creature's coloring dark or black). It started a few generations back when four black lions (two male, two female) joined up to form their own pride. Their bloodline multiplied and continued--my characters Ravenstorm and Jaeger are direct descendents--and dark outsiders from other prides continued to join the pride. Eventually the black lions developed their own way of living and belief system, complete with different guardian spirits who control all aspects of life. Currently Jaeger is the leader of the pride, which has about a score of members at any one moment.

Besides true "melanists", as they refer to themselves, meaning those who are either born into the bloodline of two melanistic parents or those who by the genetic mix of nature are born to two non-melanistic lions, the pride has a few "halfmels" - those born to a melanist and a non-melanist. These are usually looked upon with a measure of disdain; the pride believes it is unsettling and a bit unnatural. Jaeger, a leader of the pride, is the first to truly welcome halfmels into the pride, particularly because his sons Dresden and Blitz fit under the category. His reign is a marked change in the melanist's philosophy, and most of my pictures portray that stretch of time in the life of the pride.

[Please note: This pride is unaffiliated with Endless Night, the famous black-and-white lion. Also, this pride concept and the term "halfmel" in particular are (c) to me, and if you would like to do something similar or use some like aspect, I would really like you to ask me first. :) ]

Same age as Blitz. Is found nearly half-dead in a stream as a cub by normal lions, who leave her with the melanists as she is dark-colored like them. Her brown facial markings suggest she is from the east, where brown-colored lions are more common.

Daughter of Zobel and Tharia. Very shy.

The little white girl who is the daughter of Blitz and Laila.

Blitz is from a melanistic (black) outsider lion pride, but he's only three-quarters lion. His mother, a half-lynx, escaped from captivity and joined the first pride she met. His father is Jaeger, the current leader of the melanists. Blitz has a marking of a bolt of lightning on his chest, fur thicker than a lion's, lynx-like paws, and tufted ears.

Daughter of Blitz and another melanistic lioness (I haven't decided which one yet). Very mischevious. Same age as Blanca and Momba.

Mother of Ravenstorm and Pantera.

Sister of Blitz.

Son of the melanistic Jaeger and a normally-colored lioness, and thus a halfmel. Oldest of a litter of three. Rather shy and quiet.

Her name means "faith" in Swahili, and this young lioness lives up to it. She has a strong sense of destiny and guidance, and believes fervently in the spirit-guardian Othieno.

Jaeger is the leader of the Melanist pride, a group of black lions. He is the father of my character Blitz.

Son of Jira and Jasisi Mbio. Sukka's boyfriend.

Literally: 'very fast spy'.

Father was a cheetah and mother was a melanistic lioness of the pre-Kalliel pride. He is a little younger than Jaeger. Has long legs and incredible speed for a lion.He is dark grey, almost black, and as a cub his mane and tail tip are the same color as his fur, but as a teen and adult he has a slick, shiny black mane.

Personality: Something of a loner, a rogue, who always ends up in the right place at the right time. Meaning, he ends up as a semi-savior to those who find him in times of need. He got separated from his mother at an early age, and took care of himself ever since. He is not part of the melanistic pride now, but lives alone, as a rogue. Father of Jasi.

Youngster who ran away from home to join the melanists after living his whole life in a pride similar to the outlanders. Was immediately welcomed by Imani, the prophetess female his own age, and is now a steadfast member of the pride.

Sister to Ravenstorm. Very energetic and playful. She is really tomboyish in her younger years.

Mother of Paguay, sometimes-mate of Tufani.

Laïla is not technically part of the melanist pride, but she is Blitz's great friend and future mate. She is a beautiful white lioness.

A gentle-hearted lion who enjoys interacting with the cubs of the pride. He was guided to the melanists by animals who had heard of them, and has never left.

Name means "edge".

Littermate to Blanca; son of Blitz and Laila.

Joined the pride one day, and works with Imani in the art of their beliefs, an aloof and unattached lioness. The melanists suspect she is a halfmel, but no one knows where she came from. Another whispered story is that her strange markings, so clearly defined, are not true markings at all, but self-inflicted wounds now scarred over and treated to turn their golden color. This is the story most likely true, as Imani tells it. One day Moon asked Imani how her family made their star-marked foreheads look so clear, implying that some ceremony was involved (in fact Imani and her line are naturally marked). This has led to some dark suspicion over Moon's origins.

One of Okran's first litter. Okran is a halfmel but Moto's mother was a melanistic lion, so Moto is 3/4 melanist.

Name origin: Moto means "flame" in Swahili because this character's original name was Flame.

Granddaughter of Blitz. She is captured by humans when younger but eventually escapes.

His mother lived in a normal pride, but had a secret relationship with the loner living in the desert nearby, Zobel. The leader, shocked by Okran's coloring and realizing his lioness had subverted him, allowed Okran to live in the pride but encouraged taunting and bullying of the black cub. Okran was outcast when he reached adolescence and wandered on his own for quite some time, finally meeting Dresden, a half-melanistic lion cub. Dresden, the son of the leader of a melanist lion pride, invited Okran home, where he was welcomed, and got the surprise of meeting his father, Zobel, who had joined the melanists some time earlier.

Only son of Tufani and Ketsu. He is a very obedient, good-natured fellow who gets along well with everyone.
