Ok, now time for some explaination after that flurry of uploads :P I had to do a presentation on storybooks for my Composition class including making an example of my own. I had a week to do this and I'm surprised that I actually finished it in time. The drawings aren't my greatest work ever, but I'm proud and think it's a cute story. Let's just say the next art piece I do won't involve lions or marker O.O

A long time ago, before the tall pale men with their exploding spears and the land was covered in hard paths of black earth, a mother lioness welcomed her new cubs into the world. There were two boys and a little girl, and they were the most beautiful things she had ever seen. As the new family lay in the tall grass, the smallest male squeaked to make himself known. As the mother turned over to tend to her cub, she was shocked to discover that her baby stuck out like a sore thumb. He was pure white!

This worried the lioness greatly, she feared what the others would say when she returned to the pride. She was not disappointed. “You should have just left him there,” the experienced lionesses who had raised many cubs said, “He will only bring us trouble with his strange coat.” The mother was shocked; she refused to abandon ANY of her cubs. Kei, as he had been named for his white coat, was part of her first litter and she was very proud of him. She knew he would end up being special one day; the others just couldn’t see it yet.

As Kei grew up he was largely ostracized by the pride members. The other cubs had been told nasty things about him and they refused to play with him. Even his own siblings, Eko and Brisa, had to be convinced by their mother to take Kei out to play with them. The only company he had was that of his mother. Kei couldn’t understand why he was so hated by everyone else, what had he done wrong? “You must not let your opinion of yourself be changed by others, Kei,” she would always tell him. “They fear you because you are different, but that is what makes you special. I know what an amazing lion you are and they will too; you just need to be patient. One day this will all be worth it.”

Kei heeded his wise mother’s words. As he grew into a young lion he always did what the pride asked of him. Time went on and Kei grew bigger and bigger and even started to grow his mane. He longed to hunt along with his brother and sister and the rest of the cubs he had grown up alongside. But the experienced lions would have none of it. “It’s the middle of the dry season; we can’t afford to have him scaring away prey. Besides, he’d be no good at it anyway”. Kei was made to stay and babysit the newborns while the rest of the pride went out hunting.

Kei would often go off alone to practice hunting when the rest of the pride was asleep. One late night Kei looked up angrily into the sky. “When will my time come,” he cried, “when will I be able to prove to them that I’m not worthless?!” That night a few miles away, a large fire burned a village to the ground. The fierce winds of the dry season picked up the ashes and carried them over to the territory where Kei’s pride lived.

When the pride awoke the next morning, all the land around them was covered in thick, white ash. Everyone was panicked. “How will we hunt?” Kei’s brother, Eco, exclaimed. “We can no longer hide ourselves from our prey. We’ll starve!” Kei finally realized that this was the chance he had been wishing for all of his life, the chance to prove that he was just as important as any other member of the pride. “I can hunt,” he said, “With my white coat the other animals won’t even know I’m there.” “You’ll never be able to do it Kei,” a young lioness named Azuka sneered, “You can’t do anything. Just face it, you’re a bad omen and you don’t belong here”.

But Kei would not listen to the harsh words of his pride members. He ran off towards the grazing herds, determined to prove those years of hateful words wrong. That night Kei came home with enough food to feed the entire pride. He brought home food the day after that, and the day after that and the day after that. It took a month for the rains to come and wash away the layers of ash, and every day for that whole month Kei worked tirelessly to feed those who had scorned him all his life. He had finally earned the respect of his pride who had counted him out for so long. “Maybe I was wrong about you after all,” Azuka told him with a look of admiration in her eyes.

Many months had passed since the dry season of white ashes. Kei was a fully grown lion who had a pride all his own. He was blessed with abundant food and a large family with many cubs. Those who heard about his cubhood lamented about how horrible it must have been. But Kei just smiled, for he knew that if it wasn’t for his hard life he never would have had the determination that he did and wouldn’t be leading such a wonderful life. As Kei lay in his favorite grassy patch, he looked up at the setting sun and thought to himself, “You were right, Mother, you were right all along…”
