Uh, yeah… I s’pose you *might* classify me as having “left” TLKFAA. I’ve got a number of reasons behind that decision… but I think the main one that I’m needed a helluva lot more on Digital Dreams than I ever was here.

Still, that doesn’t mean I won’t be popping in with a new upload now and again, like I’m doing now. This is a birthday present for a dear friend of mine on the aforementioned Digimon RPG… it's not my best work because I rushed it, but at least I got it done while there's still 70 minutes of her 17th left where I am :>{:)

From left to right these critters are: an African Silverbill Finch (whose size is semi-deliberately very off), Sykes Monkey, Thompson’s Gazelle and Sable Antelope, all of which are on-topic.

African Dreams

Took me a while to get this up... it's the girrafe-ized Joseph, the character (and, to an extent, persona) of a wonderful, Brian-grade administrator who single-handedly got Digital Dreams back on its feet when it was knocking on death's door, as well as an all-round great friend. :>{:)

I love: giraffes. I hate: their spots. I vow never to draw one again.

Done in Sketcher (as all the pics in this series will be)... NQN was the only one to point out the Crest of Friendship on his hindquaters (it's an AU RP, therefore this guy has the Digiegg of Friendship instead of Davis)... maybe I should draw something for her if I can find the time.

African Dreams

Remember that Digimon RPG board I said was guilty for my recent inactivity? In the world of that RP there’s a movie theatre in which a space-time rift has opened, so that anyone watching a movie there can get sucked into it.
Guess what movie is showing there currently? The good ol’ Lion King, as suggested by yours truly. And like in KH2, any humans or Digimon who get enter it will take on the form of the African animal that suits them best.

I’m attempting to do a series of Sketcher portraits of all the characters involved in the LK thread there – there are 23 in total, so it’s not gonna be easy, but I’ll try.
First on the chopping block is my own character: once a dorky Brazilian tomboy, now a caracal.

A reminder for those who tend to forget the spelling of a certain canon character’s name.

…Yeah, I know I haven’t been entirely active here lately. The culprit:
DigitalDreams

It’s a role-playing board loosely based on the anime Digimon. We welcome all RPing ability levels, and only minimal Digimon knowledge is required. It was recently knocking on death’s door, but thanks to the efforts of a new admin, it’s now flourished again – just like the Pride Lands. Even so, we could use all the new *active* members we could get… join us, won’t you? The mods (of whom I’m one) will be happy to answer any questions. :>{:3

Shameless plug aside, I forgot to mention: thank you muchly for Auto Approval, Brian. :>{:D

Okay… I’m in search of constructive criticism here. I’m going to – das gasp - digitally colour this sketch at some point, but something about Pumbaa’s facial proportions is really bugging me… and I can’t put my finger on what that something is. It’s kinda frustrating. >_<

So if YOU think you know what that something is, don’t be shy about pointing it out to me. I'm aiming for this piece to look as close to the style of the movie as I can manage. Generally, if you see any little niggles in the sketch that could be fixed before I colour it, PLEASE tell me; I won’t bite! :>{:D

Takufi came out kind of good, though.

You sick of my acrylic paintings yet?

Tomorrow (UK Mothering Sunday), the original of this is going to be tactfully placed in the bottom of my mum’s annual chocolate box, because I wubs her. :3

I sat on the sketch for a while. Her card last year featured the cartoonyest mother-and-baby cat pair you’d be likely to see. I thought the style was way too cute not to emulate. So I did. It started out as just Takufi, but I eventually hit on the “Mother’s Day” thing and decided to make this the first appearance of Sabiti, Takufi’s mother as well as my mum’s “fursona.”

Bee tee double-you. That object in between them is intended as a coqussaint-shaped grub because we both love the former. ^_^

And happy Mother's Day to all reading :D

Scar as… a black mamba naga? Well, here I killed three birds (or rather, snakes) with one stone: I thought this dark, deadly, slender snake would really suit him, and I wanted to try my hand at humanising a LK character. Plus I wanted to draw my own interpretation of this creature – here, the line between human and snake is a bit more blurred than the popular version of them. It admittedly doesn’t look much like the true nagas of Hindu and Buddhist mythology, though.

Please critique this piece, but remember: the snake part does NOT LOOK LUMPY!!! [/in-joke]

Pumbaa in a... well, different style.

Oh! Have I mentioned that my coloured pencils are also watercolour pencils? In case you're not familier with those, you can dip the leads in water to produce an effect similar to watercolour paint (only it doesn't look like it here because I applied the colour too thickly). It's hard to master, but fun to experiment with. :>{:3

Sure, we all imitate the style of The Lion King. But what about a style from within the movie?

The scene that inspired this acrylic painting really embodies the calm majesty of the Lion King universe. I want Pumbaa to be integrated into that universe, too, and this picture kinda reflects that longing. Because even though he’s in the films, he’s always been depicted as not really being… part of the Circle of Life, you know? TLK1 1/2, if anything, confirmed that for me.

Comments more than one sentence long would be appreciated here.

Took a rough sketch from 2005, fleshed out the details and slapped some acrylic paint on it. I LOATHE the result, may I add (as is true of all my pics with backgrounds).

Sometimes, I get an urge to draw in a particular style or theme. The theme of this pic was: “Screw realism or accuracy to Disney; I’m just going to draw her in whichever way looks pretty!” :>{:P

The rough version was drawn on a night spent in Devon, where there’s practically no light pollution as opposed to in my own suburban neighbourhood. The night sky was truly an amazing sight… just like in TLK’s stargazing scene. That night opened my eyes to the full beauty of the cosmos. I’ve regarded artificial light as a necessary evil since then.

OMS. A background. I’m honestly never going to be good at drawing those things… and at any rate, I don’t think I could EVER manage a computer-generated BG. It makes me sad how there’s so much pressure on us to create BGs, yet people forget that pro animators don’t draw their own BGs either.

Atimon once jokingly said that coloring a jungle with one green pencil is fun, which gave me an urge to try it for myself. The difference is I used five shades instead, but the result is no better for it :>{:/

Could’ve been made better, but I simply lack the energy at the moment to work on it anymore. Maybe someone out there will like it, even though I don't AT ALL. Inspiration came from Adiemus’s fantastic song “Rain Dance.” :>{:)

NB: there is NOTHING going on between the artists these characters represent. But it makes an okay Valentine’s pic, plus I do love Legetta in the least sexual way possible. You compliment her on her art once, and suddenly she starts treating you awesome <3

Paso and Takufi both loved males they weren’t supposed to, which lead both to heartbreak. But what if they eventually ended up in the same place, and found soulmates in each other?

The anatomy could be better, but Legster also bungles a lot of anatomy (so SHE says), so we’re even. And perhaps Paso’s hair is a tad too voluminous. My excuse is that when you feel good on the inside, it manifests itself on the outside.

Platontic, romantic... interpret it how you like.

This was supposed to be part of a much larger pic commenting on the recent Pumbaa Season (as Pegasuss so aptly dubbed it), but it seems to have died down now (sob), plus I thought this pic would actually stand better on its own.

Everything but the shading (done in PSP8) was done in Sketcher. Kind of cute… looks a bit more professional than most of my Sketcher pics; reminds me a bit of kourukon's art (albeit not as good). Atsaki helped with the cleanup on this, so thanks to her :>{:)

It’s amazing how drawing something as simple as one’s fave character for the first time in over a month (don’t believe the upload dates in this folder; they’re liars) can snap one out of an artist’s block instantly. :)

Here, the style of the pic sixth from the bottom resurfaces: youngish adult Pumbaa on one of his shy days. I love this style SO MUCH… I’ve thought of establishing it as my consistent, hallmark style for warthogs, which would be a bold move considering how hard it is to get right.

I’m not exactly sure where to go with this sketch (hence why I didn’t bother cleaning it up at all). Colour it, and if so, in what medium? Suggestions, anyone?

Believe it or not, the full-body ones are actually two of the *best* of several of my recent attempts to draw Timon with no reference!

On the left is the extent of my reffless-yet-on-model Timon-drawing abilities; the right a half-arsed attempt at applying a different, almost anime-esque style to him. The bottom middle one was reffed from a screencap; the top middle was reffed from the drawing straight below it.

I was intending to doodle a random lion with a crazy hairstyle, but the head started looking more like Rafiki, so I turned it into him. Then a crossoverly thought popped into my head: “Rafiki and Coco are both insane, underrated, and awesome – and both have hair that’s illegally fun to draw” (I’d been looking at Foster’s fanart earlier that day). So I just spontaneously added Coco, and here we have those two probably plotting something against the sane characters.

Inked in ballpoint pen. Not a sausage of reference used. Also my first time drawing a Foster’s character other than Bloo… go me ;>{:D I’m starting to feel the need to branch out to other genres (but I doubt I’ll abandon TLK altogether), and develop my memory-drawing skillz.

It occurred to me that I’d benefit from having a style for warthogs that I could draw more quickly and easily than the semi-realistic ones I’m used to.

This guy was the result of randomly deciding to draw a ‘hog looking cartoony with as few lines as possible, and rooted in the real creatures rather than Disney’s version of them.

Also reintroducing myself to felt-tip pens, my medium of choice a decade ago – they smelled foul and almost killed the paper, though, so I doubt it’ll be a permanent reintroduction.

I could definitely get used to this style – emphasis on “get used to” as opposed to “adopt instantly.”

I’ve been enjoying Sketcher so much lately, I’d forgotten how good it felt to draw with a pencil and paper! Here's Rafiki grinning at you, done with reference.

I’ve heard lots of artists say “I can’t draw Rafiki” (or the hyenas, or Timon or Pumbaa or Zazu). If you’re one of those artists, ask yourself: is that just your way of saying you don’t want to draw Rafiki? Or that you’re afraid of venturing outside your lion comfort zone?

If you study screencaps in detail, try to replicate the poses in your sketches, then move on to creating your own original poses and expressions, you’ll be surprised what an unfounded notion “I can’t draw [character x]” is.

This is the knowledge I pass on to thee – go forth and conquer.

I resolved draw more birds and non-Pumbaa canon this year, so here I killed two birds with one stone – oops, maybe not the best analogy…

Story behind this Sketcher pic: In Dick King-Smith’s amazing book “The Cuckoo Child,” a schoolboy switches out his pet geese’s eggs with an ostrich egg he *ahem* borrowed from the local zoo. While the female goose goes out for a swim, she tells her husband “guard the eggs,” not knowing about the switch – and the male is consequently puzzled when he sees only one, huge egg. His wife later weasels out of the awkward situation by bluffing that she was misheard, and actually said “guard the egg, sir.” The male then happily spazzes off, thrilled at being addressed as “sir”…

More fruits of the Sketcher!

Nala (the mystery of whose eye colour has now been solved: one of each); random cub listening in on the conversation of Zira’s parents (if he’d stayed longer, he’d have heard the mum saying “Cheese”); random cub drawn to reflect my feelings that the lovely cho-cho kept getting disconnected; zebra more resembling a warthog (what else?); my colouring of an unsigned eye sketch (my best Sketcher pic to date). Again, credits:

Featuring: a warthog with a brush-tail for some reason (obviously the first); Scar being sad because Zuko’s scar is bigger than his; my inking of a sketch by Larka18; Timon literally hanging around (my first *successful* one); an aardvark with multiple piercings and an attitude problem. My first time on Sketcher was proof that Legetta is still way too nice to me. After I smear craptacular lineart all over one of her pics, she catches my infectious warthog fixation and draws one’s head. As of now, anyone who “just decides” they like warthogs is a poser X>{:D

Took the liberty of linearting it with MS Paint’s Curve tool, and colouring in PSP8.

Some important notes about my “relationship” with Sketcher: if you see me there not drawing but looking, or just anti-socially drawing alone in a corner, it’s because I’m just starting to acquaint myself with the program. Before I can produce decent art there, I’ll need to give myself room to practice without the distraction of socialization. That’s how AS works, I’m afraid :>{:/

This started as an experiment in drawing with base shapes, inspired by the simple-but-useful book Learn to Draw TLK… however I eventually ended up using my normal method for constructing characters, using misshapen blobs instead of clear circles.

So for the most part this is just a very insignificant, very off-model and very messy Takufi sketch. I have a habit of cleaning up stray lines around my sketches, but leaving the construction lines inside the character visible. Maybe because it creates a vague impression of a tangible entity on an intangible background?

The rough version of this was drawn around the same time as the big-eyed Pumbaa, and was done to illustrate a line from TLKoS*. If you haven’t seen it and don’t like good jokes being spoiled, don’t look. Only recently did I solidify any of the details - back in 2005, I struggled with his expression.

This looks NOTHING like Timon as he appeared in the movies – but then again, neither did the thing from the T&P series. Plus: Rainer Basedow sounds nothing like Ernie Sabella, but does he still sound like Pumbaa? The same principle applies here.

*The Lion King on Stage, an abbreviation I’ll be using frequently from now on. It’s hardly fitting to use TLKoB, since I didn’t see it on Broadway.

Das GASP! Check out the date… and my old signature ^_^

I’m ‘ploding this ‘cause I’m almost certain it was my first time drawing Pumbaa completely referenceless… a pretty important milestone for me, then. I went through a phase of drawing him with unrealistically huge eyes and some ridiculous spiky fringe (most likely a wig), as seen here. Took me surprisingly long to realise that he’s (ugh, cliché) fine the way he is, and needn’t to conform to the anime fangirl standard of bishieness for me to enjoy drawing him.

This did go through a little editing from its raw form: I used a pencil to re-define most of the lines and fill in some long-lost details, sans the back legs, which I never really intended to draw in the first place.

The sketch of this is pretty old, and I’m not all that fond of it (the anatomy is my worst yet, and Pumbaa looks like a demented lovechild of Quasimodo and a sausage), but at least it provided a good test subject (punchbag if you will) for my new pencils.

I’m pretty sure this was the first time I ever drew Pumbaa and Takufi together. T’was inspired by the reality show Dancing On Ice, which featured some interesting poses and routines, and they inspired me to draw my most difficult pose yet.

Her art of the character you see lionized here draws incredible feelings regarding said character, due to the fact that she takes everything I love about him and brings out for all to see as plain as the gap in his teeth… as well as digs up new details about him for me to appreciate. She’s not an employee of the company behind the show for nothing: see her gallery NOW; that is an order.

I'm gradually getting closer to working out where to draw the line between "too human/Disney-derivative" and "too grotesque/unemotional" when it comes to warthogs. My lifelong (well, two-year-long) dream is to direct an animated film about them one day, therefore the experience is invaluable.

The intention was for him to look as on-model and purely Disney-ish as possible, but inevitably, *some* of my personal style did creep in… I just enjoy using a slight variation on Disney style more than a straight copy of it, I guess.

By the time I was almost done, I’d already deviated from my mental model sheet so much I thought “what the hell, I’ll give him the black eye he had in a few concept drawings” (ouch! For his number one fan, I sure can be mean to him sometimes). Because, you know, angst-begetting eye wounds aren’t just for lions.

Old and/or craptacular stuff

I’ve been on a bit of an Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy high ever since series five started in the UK. Stylistically, it’s one of my fave cartoons ever: I love the elasticity of the character movements and lip-synching.

I’ve really needed an excuse to draw in the EEnE-style recently. What a stroke of luck that the current contest should give me that excuse! X>{:D

This pic was NOT as easy to draw as it looks. T'was quite a task to teach myself a whole new style before I could even get started on one little doodle that’s too ug-lee to win anyway, but it was worth it considering I have WAY too much fun with this style.

My first time using acrylic paint. Whoo. Constructive crit, por favor.

Old and/or craptacular stuff

*Old picture, fairly old picture…*

Done after reading the prologue of this… it was so raw and emotional, it brought out feelings in me that NEEDED to be put on paper, which had never before happened in my life.

A note on the paws: around the time this was drawn, I seriously considered the idea of giving Takufi the front legs of a lioness, for two reasons: one, to give her the ability to grasp objects and make “hand” gestures; two, because lion limbs are just too gorgeous for their own good. I might still use them if the individual picture calls for it, but since having the idea I’ve grown out of the need to unnecessarily prettify my warthogs, and so do my best to avoid using paws.

Old and/or craptacular stuff

‘Nother scrapbook page, this time with stuff ranging from April 2005 to last month.

Clockwise from top left: cartoony Raufu head; REALLY scrappy Simba looking eerily like NQN’s Shady; Sounder Rock (where Pumbaa and Takufi both come from in my fanfic) plus random guy for size comparison only; recently-done Kudu I only got round to half-colouring; two little splashes of off-topic work; two Rafiki-style Pumbaas inspired by a TLK1 ½ cut scene; how boarding school makes me feel; more playing around with Rafiki’s style (Raufu again).

Twagically I can only seem to upload archaic stuff right now... yesh.

Old sketch with life breathed into it via Crayolas; lineart was done on the plane to Rio de Janiero about this time last year, reflecting my feelings at the time. I’m kinda proud of this one considering about 30% of the sketch was done as the plane actually landed!

I personally love plane-travel. You’re just sitting there on an uber-comfy chair with any close friends or family an arm’s reach away, with a host of flight attendants scurrying around waiting on you hand and foot, with your hand luggage accessible at any time and no distractions from the world below aside from the quality in-flight movies (we had W&G:CotW – score!). It’s like you’re in a tiny, but blissful world of your own, and that’s not even in a first-class seat!

I figured it’d be more space-efficient to upload all the cheunate doodles I’ve ever done (which are few in number, I admit) in one neat little package.

Clockwise from top left: first ever drawing of a doe; the Doodle That Started It All; an adolesenct buck with an overly booshy tail; a very stylized sleeping doe; a proud, aloof and half-drawn buck; a fantasy orientated doe on a pastel theme.

These are all exceptionally messy. I know it. And I love it. And yeah... this'll have to serve as a temporary reference sheet for the species, I'm sorry to say. One day I'll get a semi-half-decent ref sheet of them up... one day!!!

A little scrapbook page of my sketches from 2005.

Clockwise from top left: Marcus from The Life and Times of Juniper Lee as a lion cub, drawn while watching the show (I just saw him once and thought: OMG!! That design is just SCREAMING OUT to be LIONIZED!); a rather limp attempt at humour with Takufi (then called Katifa); the Nala who served as reference for the pose of the sketch of my profile pic; the wild boar from The Last Unicorn (off-topic, but one of my better shading jobs); a little comparison of Pumbaa and Takufi’s eyes and tusks, and chibi “Katifa” being overly protective of a particularly special DVD.

All crap, but still something for the art historian in all of us.

Only uploading to address a key issue:

Yes, I am very much sexually attracted to him. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Pumbaa isn’t real – I acknowledge that, I accept that and I respect that, as all couples tolerate each other’s flaws. I knew right from the outset that I’d never be able to physically “get anywhere” with him. Physically, animated characters have no feelings - but NOTHING can take away the richness and depth with which he lives in my soul.

Some people draw the fantasy/reality line a bit blurrier. Often, this is due to a serious and incurable psychological disorder (as I have), and they may NEVER grow out of this mentality in their lifetimes. I hope all who read this will keep an open mind about those people.

Wow, I’ve never entered one of these contest thingys before! Well, that should be logical, since I’ve never been *able* to do so until recently. X>{:D

Pumbaa: “Hey Timon, you were right! Thumbs rock!”
Timon: “So does having a built-in shovel, but do you see me showing off like it’s going outta fashion?”

Look at Pumbaa’s hair, and the shape of his head. Somehow both remind me of Ernie, and not the good Ernie either!!

Not that much to say about this one - except that crappy pencil-drawn skies and crappy attempts to rectify them in PSP8 really don't mix. On top of that, I promised myself I wouldn't upload a picture of this genre - but really, my PMT had other ideas.

A simple demonstration of my coloured pencil prowess (or lack thereof).

I personally hate the Sonic series and I hate its fandom ten times as much, but man what a style.

I owe this completely pointless and messy sketch entirely to Timali – her mouse animation is, put simply, by far the cutest thing on this entire archive. Yes, even more so than any Pumbaa pic, I’m sorry to say.

A doodle, summing up my feelings after a school trip to a “careers convention” or something of the sort… if you don’t get what that is, the caption pretty much sums it up.

So, now you lot know why I almost never draw Timon even though I find him really funny and charismatic and adorable: because I CAN’T. *sulk* However, Mike Surrey has stated more than once that Timon’s facial features are largely derived from those of Nathan Lane, and drawing this made me realise just how right he is: at first I loathed the pic, but after I thickened the eyebrows to what you see here, I began to feel just a tiny bit satisfied with it.

Introducing not only my Crayolas, but my very own fursona: Takufi, who’s been around since this time in 2004. On the surface she hasn’t changed much: but placed next to my first sketch and description of her, the modern day her symbolises a HUGE leap in confidence in my abilities and a HUGE drop in my inhibition.

Here you see three accessories that mean a lot to me in the real world, and none of which I actually owned at the time of designing her. Pink hat, TLK charm bracelet – and glasses, A lot of people in the modern age seem to somehow have it in their heads that spectacles are “ugly,” but I’m inclined to disagree: if anything, they add personality, and are a fun accessory to complement a character (hence the pose).

Bingo! First canon upload for yours truly is this sketch of Pumbaa, ce très jeune phacochère. I myself find it hard to believe, but interesting, how a piglet this petit and traditionally cute could grow into an adult as course and bulky as he did – while retaining every ounce of sweet innocence.

Simple as heck and messy as hell, but among the ranks of my TLK artwork, one of my personal faves… I just adore the way his anatomy and expression turned out. He’s like: [Aang's voice] “Uuh, hi there… *fidget* I’m Pumbaa, and the doctor says my digestive system is wired a little differently from yours, so watch where you stand around me… heh.” Cute!

This drawing depicts an old and dear friend of mine: maybe you know him as Pumbaa, but he is affectionately known to me as Phacochoerus Aethiopicus. Here, you see him depicted as close to the way he really is as my pencil could conjure: he is extremely warty, unkempt, brutish-looking, hairy and, at the end of the day, simply not pretty. But I still love him.

An experiment to see if I could draw an animal of this kind completely naked (i.e., with no influence from Disney at all) and entirely from memory. The result was… adequate, I guess. Still an interesting way to come on with a bang, though. BTW, all this “he” business is not sexist in the least; the number of warts and length of the tusks clearly give this guy away as a boar.
