Adolescent Jothra, version 2.0!

A few months ago it hit me: Mufasa, Scar, Simba, and even Nuka all have manes that trail down their chests, but Kovu does not. That's because he's in his late teens. So I decided to try the short-mane look with Jothra, and I personally like it waaaay better than my other version of him. Isn't he cute now? (If we follow through with this logic, Kovu will have to be drawn with the longer mane style during the story.)

Jothra when he's older... this is approximately what he looks like for about half the story. The screenplay says he's an "adolescent," but also mentions in a few places that his mane covers his chest. Seeing as Disney never drew any lions with manes like this (they were either along the neck only or fully adult, never somewhere in between) I'll be drawing him with a full mane as well to see if it looks any better.

Oh em gee. This has got to be the Disney-est picture I've ever drawn in my whole life. It looks fresh from the studio! *gasp*
