And the final Bird Bonanza picture! Picture in Sharpie markers of a Baglafecht Weaver.

I will still be uploading bird pictures for the winners of my contests, but the Bonanza itself is now officially over. Thank you to everyone who took the time to support, draw, or just admire African birds these past two weeks!

Sorry I didn't upload yesterday, our school is hosting a debate tournament and it's been c-raz-y around here lately.

So here's a two-for-one deal for you. In this picture is a young African harrier hawk, a very cool bird. Info for you: african.harrier-hawk.html

Also in this picture is my first ever realistic lion profile on Sketcher, which I think turned out pretty well. Reffed of course ;)

This is my Bird Bonanza sketcher bird-profile for today: the blue-capped waxbill. This is the species I think most likely to be the bird that Timali / tipu's fursona "Birdie" was based on.

Some information: cordonbleufinches.html
They are a light blue color with orange bellies and pinkish beaks. I think the resemblance between these two is actually a bit closer than Zazu is to his actual species.

Sketcher profile for the day. It's a Little Egret done with sort of a watercolor effect (or at least that's what I was trying for). These birds are found not only in east Africa, but over much of the world along with snowy egrets, their New World counterparts.

Another one of the Sharpie pictures I put in my banner. It's a happy little striped swallow. However, I don't know if my ref was of a greater or lesser striped swallow... they're very similar.

I think it's probably a greater striped swallow. What do you think?

If you've been in Sketcher while I've been on recently, you probably saw me drawing birds. And they're very different from the most recent ones I've uploaded! Sketcher is an excellent place to mimic real-media painting, and that's what I've done. I'm going to upload one of these bird profiles per day.

This is actually supposed to be Drowan, my African Crowned Crane character that I created last year. And his crown was something to work on, I can tell you!

Here's Elligre, a male Little Egret. These birds, a type of heron, usually hunt unlike most fisherbirds (staying still for long periods of time); they tend to chase and dash after their prey. They do not live exclusively in Africa, in fact, they can be found in many different parts of the world.

This is a picture of my character Garrip, who is a green-tinted Cape Sugarbird. These birds are much like typical hummingbirds, taking nectar from flowers to feed. The males of this species have very large tails, usually about twice their body length, and the females' tails are about half that.

Find out more about cape sugarbirds at:
Cape_Sugarbird

Character info:
Garrip is your typical show-off. One of his favorite pasttimes consists of hovering above puddles and small pools of water, admiring his reflection. Although he's quite vain, Garrip is also a fast learner. He quickly learned to not let his tail feathers touch the surface of the water, after a scary encounter with a rather large fish.

Canisp is an African Spoonbill. Her species is easily recognized by their large beaks, which become spoon-shaped during adolescence.

Here's some excellent information on these birds:
african_spoonbill.htm

Character information:
Canisp is a very shy female, but she has a good reason for being unobtrusive. After trauma as a chick when her mother abandoned her, Canisp became mute. Now she is drastically cut off from others of her species, and becomes more and more solitary by the day. If she doesn't find a family unit or flock soon, she could wind up easy prey for predators.

Capega is an African Cape Gannet, a type of bird that only nests along the coast of Africa. They are easily recognized by their white bodies, black tails and wingtips, and golden crests. They are currently a threatened species.

More at:
africa_cape_gannet.html

Character info:
Being the bird your family looks up to is a hard job, but Capega's just the guy to do it. He's a big father figure, especially now that many of his own chicks have made it to adulthood, and continue to acknowledge his authority. Capega has to be careful, though, not to get too bossy, or the females of the flock would raise a coup and get him thrown out. So Capega is all about moderation and as a result is a effective leader.

This female named Ceranu is a Blue Crane, the national bird of South Africa. This species is admired by many native tribes. Almost all cranes "dance", using graceful movements that are used to calm them down, relieve stress, and sometimes for attracting mates.

Check out this link to the International Crane Foundation:
blue.cfm#

Character info:
Crane-dancing is life to Ceranu. She is a master of the graceful bends and bows of her species' dancing, often spending more time than looking for food. Not a problem, though; she can always count on fish presents from the blue crane males in her area. They are all looking for her to be a mate, but Ceranu's dancing career doesn't have room for husbands.

Here is a picture of Frist, a male Striped Kingfisher. He's a very small bird, smaller even than the common sparrow (but larger than a bee-eater). Males have bright blue backs that can be seen while they are in flight.

Learn more about this species at:
Striped%20Kingfisher%20Info.htm

Character info:
A happy marriage can do wonders to a bird like Frist. Before he met his current mate, he was timid, jumpy, and basically afraid of his own shadow. Now he's become the ultimate daddy kingfisher, bold enough to snatch insects from under lions' feet. He'd do anything for his lovely wife, and eagerly awaits the hatching of his first eggs.

Rwin is a female Spur-winged Plover. You may recognize the species--these birds are famous for cleaning the teeth of crocodiles (without being munched).

Some information on spur-winged plovers can be found here:
view.php?id=175

Character information:
If you're looking for a daredevil bird with some attitude, look no further than Rwin. This feisty female takes crocodile teeth-cleaning to the extreme, staying in the mouths of the big reptiles even after the dentistry is done. She will hang on to the last possible second until the jaws snap shut before heading for the hills (or, in her case, trees) and gets ready to do it all over again tomorrow with another croc.

This is Luewa, a male Blue Waxbill. He's a beautifully camouflaged bird--when on the ground, he can huddle down and only his brown feathers will show, while high in the air, his sky-blue belly is hard to spot against a sunny sky.

Here's a link with a bit of information on these birds:
Blue%20Waxbill%20Info.htm

Character information:
Here's a chipper little guy who loves throwing a party with a few dozen buddies. But get snippy with him, and he'll dodge into the nearest tree. Luewa is like that: a party animal when it suits him, a real chicken when confronted. Hopefully when he finds a mate he'll settle down a bit.

Awahi is a White-bellied Go-away bird (yes, that's the real name) and she is probably my favorite African bird at the moment.

Here's a picture and link:

Character information:

Here is a picture of Drowan, an African Crowned Crane. This is a beautiful bird species, but it is currently threatened because of habitat destruction. Learn more about crowned cranes at:

azafcran.html

Character information:
Drowan is a crowned crane, and a member of the largest flock of his species in Eastern Africa. He flies with over 100 other cranes, and experiences separation anxiety when he isn't within sight of a fellow member of his species. He's middle-aged, around ten years old, and has raised over a dozen chicks so far.

This is Shaw, an Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk, another cool African bird. Here's a link to a picture of one:

7145med.jpg

A Pale Goshawk actually has barring on its underside, but I didn't include this in my drawing, so Shaw is unusual in that regard.

Character information:
Shaw is an Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk who has just entered adulthood, and is still on the small side for his species. Unlike most of his kind, he doesn't have a barred chest, and is shunned for it. He has the unfortunate habit of perching out on open branches, which has led to a couple of very narrow escapes from predators.
