Another Sketcher thing with ref...this one was entirely too much trouble. It took forever and I almost gave up on the coloring at one point. I ended up fading all the colors because they were overwhelming the underlying sketch. But it's finally over with. Yay!

It's Simba and Nala, of course. Feel free to provide your own caption. ^^

Another Sketcher doodle. It's my second week of school and so far I haven't had much free time.

This is the subcanon lion "King Joe" (who I call Joka) and the three little subcanon girls I've made his cubs on my personal version of the TLK family tree. The orange cub is the one I call Chungwa, from the Shooting Star comic. She has a different mother from the twins, Paka (light brown) and Pacha (dark brown). Those two appeared in the SP Active Play game.

On a side note, I've noticed that Joe's tail appears either broken or badly crooked in the comic: False%20Ancestor/ Wonder if there's a story behind that...

Akril just uploaded a bunch of subcanon cubs and moms from the SP Active Play game that I hadn't seen before. :D Naturally, I'm in heaven because I have an unnatural compulsion to fit every canonish lion ever into my convoluted family tree. It has to be some kind of disorder but I love it. Love it!

I am trying to pace myself, though. XD So this pic has only one of them, a mother lioness from the game (though she's a cub here). My name for her is Ayari, "rascal".

IMO, Ayari's parents are the two here, Mega (from TLK6NA) and Jambazi (OC). Some might remember my theory that beanie-tag Nuka and Zira were siblings. Jambazi is also their mother, but Ahadi is their father. They're supposed to be adolescent in this picture but I fail.

What's more harmonious than a bunch of cubs relaxing together on a lazy day? Even the babysitter looks relatively mellow. ^^

For the site contest...various colored pencils, plus fine-tipped Sharpie on yellow paper. Obviously my real media skills lag far behind my digital ones. XD No help from the murderous scanner.

Originally this piece was inspired by a specific concept art painting some of you might recognize. ;) I expanded the idea from there. All of the cubs are canon and subcanon ones Simba's age, from comics and such. From the top: Nala, Kula, Tibuka, Mheetu, Tuli, Chumvi, Chungwa, Twana, Tojo, Scar, Simba, Malka, Chafu, and Tama.

Was watching TV and saw this adorable documentary with lion cubs in it. An older lion cub and a much younger one were playing tug-of-war with a zebra tail (look, a cat toy!). I just had to draw Simba and Mheetu doing the same.

Might put the lineart up in the Coloring Cave since I haven't done something like that in a while.

900 Pictures!!

Little Sketcher doodle of Tojo's parents for fun. I don't think Tojo's mother is too pleased with her brood of three...

First time attempting a design for Tojo's father. He's supposed to be Mega's son so I tried to reflect that in his look and I'm liking it so far. Tojo's mother actually appeared in his comic from the neck up. The three cubs are Tojo (of course), and his two sisters Tibuka and Chafu (from the "Dirty Cub" comic).

Simba was teased for having too little hair...guess what Tojo is teased for! XD The two girls are Tibuka and Chafu, from the "Dirty Cub" comic, and I've decided to make them his sisters. Tojo needs to get him some bird minions, cause right now he's outnumbered two-to-one!

Poor little Mheetu doesn't have any other cubs his own age to play with so he tries to fit in with his sister's friends...

Sketcher/Photoshop. The bg is basically laziness because I was tired. If Nala looks a bit off it's because she was originally supposed to be Kula but I changed my mind halfway through. And big thanks to Majordomo for helping me figure out Zazu's anatomy. :)

Quick 1.5hr pic on Sketcher...where you may not be seeing me as much now that I got Photoshop from Santa Claus! Hurray! Once I get my student status verified by Adobe, CS4 will be up and running. :D And my parents also completely surprised me by getting me a new tablet for Christmas, so unexpected--I knew there was a reason I loved them so much!

Congratulations to everyone who got new tablets or software or computers or even a new sketchpad for Christmas! I share your joy this holiday season. ^^

I SURRENDER!

Okay, maybe that's a tad dramatic. But I'm sick of dealing with this montage so I'm just going to upload what I've got. It was supposed to be for the site contest (which just has one hour left as I put this up) but life got in the way.

I underestimated how much using Photoshop shortened the time it took to put an entry together. Anyway, all of the pieces of this picture were made in Sketcher; each separate character. I then used GIMP to put them together. There were supposed to be a lot more IJCWTBK animals to balance out the others, plus bg, but I give up. I learned a lot though...maybe next contest I'll get one done before it ends...

Concept: "Behind every great leader is an even greater entourage."

Good News: I have a new laptop that's coming to college with me!

Bad News: Said laptop won't have Photoshop on it, as I have no product key. As of tomorrow, I will *poof* have no Photoshop for a long time. And I do 99.9% of my artwork in it.

Meaning: My uploads will fall off. I'm going to be busy with this going-to-college deal, and w/o my main editing program... it doesn't look good for productivity. It may be Nov/Dec (Photoshop gift?), when I've settled into college life, before you see me become this active again.

So I feel awful atm, but I know ASU will be a lot of fun. I'll upload when I can, but no promises now. :(

(Any suggestions for image programs are welcome--free or otherwise!)

MALKA: The book *clearly* says he has a black mane and green eyes. Ahadi definitely looked more like Scar!

TOJO: Are you kidding? A picture is worth a thousand words, and *both* pictures of Ahadi show him as a darker Mufasa clone!

It's the ongoing debate about the appearance of Ahadi, father of Mufasa and Scar. He is from "The Tale of Two Brothers" story of The Lion King: 6 New Adventures. Problem is, his textual description differs greatly from the pictures in the book. One example: TwoBrothers.png

Simba's friends Tojo and Malka are clearly at odds over this issue. And it may just be mere coincidence that each cub sees Ahadi as rather similar to himself... ;)

Believe it or not, this scene was taken directly out of a German comic called "Save Nala" -- lightning strikes near Simba's tail and the tuft catches on fire! Poor Simba, that would scare me too!

Ahnza was happy to join his big brother's coalition, but was less than thrilled when he realized one of his appointed tasks would be babysitter.

Because Acidmouth has the neatest adoptables, and I would love to have Ahnza be a peripheral character in a little pet project I'm working on. Edit: I didn't get him, so I guess he's just a temporary babysitter for Ni and the other cub. XD

Just a tidbit that is centered around Mheetu and his age, and how it might relate to real lions in the wild.

I've been thinking of doing little factsheets like this for a while, based upon actual lion habits and characteristics, and how they would either factor into or change the Lion King world. Would anyone be interested in seeing more?

The three cubs from the Shooting Star comic needed a father, so guess who I picked? It's "King Joe", from a different comic, whom I call Joka (big snake). He ventures into the Pridelands and lies to Simba in order to get food.

So my canon spin-off story is that Joka was the father of Twana, Chungwa, and Tuli but was cast out of the pride by either Mufasa or Ahadi. The cubs, however, were able to stay.

Three canon cubs from the "Shooting Star" comic done in Sketcher with random PS bg. I made them sheets forever ago, but not drawn since.

I finally decided on names. The lightest one, the ringleader, is called a "rascal" by Rafiki, so I am going to call him Twana, meaning "rascal, scoundrel, impolite" in Swahili. The orange girl I am going to call Chungwa, meaning "orange, taken care of". The last guy I had trouble with, because he never talks; I wanted to call him Tuli, meaning "silent", but on a site search, I was surprised to find TUS had actually named this character the same thing(!), although her version was female. But I think I will call him Tuli, despite the gender change. Please give TUS the original name idea, though. ;)

I am ridiculously crazy-mad right now because Photoshop corrupted the file of the picture I was making for the site contest, and now I can't open it or alter it at all. I was so sick of the program I escaped into Paint to cool down and do this little picture.

I don't want to think about how much work I put into that picture...and now no one will even see it finished. I doubt I'm going to start over, so...yeah. Crazy-mad!

Yeah, so I liked the idea of Amadi so much I decided to make him one of my canon spin-off characters. (He was designed as a brother to Simba.) I think I'm going to have him older than Simba. I also really liked FireLemming's idea (in a contest pic) of a cub meant to be the next king "mysteriously" dying.

My idea is that Amadi supposedly died in an attack by hyenas. That's when the shadowlands were separated from Mufasa's rule, and all hyenas banished there. I'm still toying with the concept of having him survive (like with Simba, hyenas can mess things up), just because I want to draw him as an adult sometime.

It's....an....ANIMATION!
I know, I know, shocked me too.

It's been so long since I've done one, mostly b/c I don't have Flash. But I've snooped around a tad, and was inspired by some of our more accomplished animators. So finally I bit the bullet and did a frame-by-frame in Windows Movie Maker (which is about the most sophisticated technology I can get my hands on atm)... 165 individual frames, all told. The style is very heavily inspired by Audrey Cosmo's WMV uploads, because I think they are totally cool.

Anyway, this is just a silly animation about all of the different cubs that exist in comics, etc. but of course are never in the movies. Simba's counting his "friends".

I was watching the Animal Planet TV show "The Most Extreme" featuring defenses and there was this utterly cute bit on the tortoise where it was played with by a sleepy lion cub who didn't seem to realize it was a tortoise! So here's a quick sketch of Simba with a terrified chew toy.

Wow, this background was difficult, but I just love the colors. The purples especially. Well worth the time and effort. Step five is bee-yoo-tee-full. It's of Simba running away from the Pridelands.

There have been several changes in getting to this step two. First, many of the sketch lines have been erased. Simba has been outlined more darkly. A soft pencil was used to apply some basic shading. He's been more filled in and polished into a true b-and-w drawing.

So here's step 2 of Timon - at this point there doesn't seem to be much difference from the sketch, but it's actually a black-and-white drawing done entirely in pencil.
