5 - Seeking Solace

As the Pridelands fell further and further into darkness, sources of comfort became exceedingly rare. And for Nala, there was only one lion whose presence could bring solace, and peace--if only for moments at a time.

Nala and Ni, of course. Ni is a rogue from TLK6NA. Aisha named this request as her prize for correctly naming all the characters in my Disney cat pic. I completely forgot that I hadn't uploaded it yet!

This was meant to be a sort of contrast to Nala and Simba's romance in TLK. I tried to make Ni look older and perhaps a bit more groomed, but I'm more pleased with Nala. Some PS tree brushes used in the bg. There are parts of this that bother me now, but I hope you like it, Aisha!

Koraden's Comprehensive TLK Family Tree

47 - Creation
Putting it into my 100 pics. So happy with this! :D

Disclaimer: This is in no way an official family tree. It's based off personal theories and yours may be different. I name characters that were unnamed in subcanon but people have called them other things. I've also incorporated original characters alongside canon.

Basically it's an extended family tree. I used published pics and screencaps whenever possible (bg is also a screencap) excepting Ahadi. Most outlanders aren't on it yet.

The golden line = the royal bloodline. Dark red indicates a mating and the red lines lead to the offspring. I'll be updating this now and then to fill in gray boxes or add new chars.

99 - Solitude

As Simba grew older, he realized his two best friends were both more and less than he could ever wish for. He still longed for the family and security that his childhood pride had afforded him. And one day, Simba realized that he could no longer remember quite what his parents looked like. It stunned him that the faces of the ones he most cared for were now almost impossible to recall. They were his parents: they had given him life. If they faded from memory...would he fade as well?

Simba drawn wholly in Sketcher, bg in PS. He's supposed to be somewhat of an older teen, almost adult but still recalling TLK 1.5 design. It took forever to make him look right (but his hair was fun.}

30 - Under The Rain

The first storm of the rainy season, and Ahadi took his sons out to watch. Mufasa was excited every time the lightning flashed across the sky, but Taka flinched from the loud noises.

"Why does the sky do that, Dad?" asked Mufasa.

"Every year during this time the Great Kings wage battles to determine which of them is the strongest and bravest of all," explained Ahadi. "The light flashes off one's teeth as he snarls, and then you can hear his roar right afterward."

As the first raindrops began to fall on Pride Rock, Taka peered up into the sky. Nobody asked him, but he knew the Kings were weeping...sorry for ever having fought in the first place.

19 - Gray

Poor fella doesn't have a very good life after he's tossed out on his ear by big bro Mohatu. :(

Oh yeah, I've decided to call him Choyo, which means "selfish" in Swahili, because he is the "selfish lion" that appears in the picture book The Brightest Star.

This stupid pic took me 4 hours in Sketcher because halfway through the sketch layer was deleted (and I was both sketching and lining in sketch). But I salvaged the darn thing so here it is. Ugh.

33 - Expectations

Part of an entry if I get my act together. Mufasa's asking his grandfather, Mohatu, to tell him a story.

I just want to comment for a sec on how many drawings I've seen neglecting Mohatu's design. They incorrectly make him a brown Mufasa clone. There are a couple of little differences.

1. His curl. He has a cute little curl over the right side of his forehead, very obvious when you read the storybook. It's his most distinctive feature, seen in 6 pictures of his 10 or so.
2. He has elbow tufts, like Scar. Visible in 7 pics.
3. At the time of the story, his mane doesn't extend to his belly like Mufasa and Scar's. (Elbow tufts often mistaken for this.)

So yeah, it bugs me. XD Sorry. I love the curl.

56 - Danger Ahead

26 - Tears

And when the sun rose on the dawn after Kopa had been found, his broken body was laid on the tip of Pride Rock...for the place where he first met the world was also the one from which his spirit would depart. The shaman said the rites; the parents said goodbye to a son who had been with them for too brief a time. Kopa watched them with tears in his eyes until he felt a touch on his shoulder and a presence beside him.

"Come, young one," murmured the great lion, who shone with golden light as if he were born of the sun itself. "It's time to go."

34 - Stars

Yes, I'm still here and my brain is still messed up as usual. For the site contest. Don't tell me to lionize a fight between good and evil from another movie without being prepared to suffer the consequences! *maniacal laugh*

A traitorous relative with multitudes of minions. A strange mentor who bestows advice. A naive young male. A comedic duo, a loyal sidekick. A feisty princess in love with a dashing rogue. No, it's not the Lion King movies--it's classic Star Wars!

I can't draw humans for the life of me, so there's a new cast of Episode IV now. Leia had to be played by Nala, so Simba's her love interest and her little bro Mheetu is now a Jedi Knight. Rest of them were obvious. :)

89 - Through the Fire

Simba hunched his shoulders, as grim as the barren gray lands surrounding him. He couldn't meet his mother's eyes. Instead the new king surveyed the desolation. "I came back too late. The herds are gone...the plains have burned... The Pridelands I knew has vanished, Mom, and all I rule over is ash."

Sarabi smiled. "Don't tell me you have forgotten the circle of life, my son. Death follows life, and life follows death." The old lioness swept her paw across the ground, revealing a sprout of green straining for the sunlight.

"And now that you are king, our pride can truly live again."

91 - Drowning

And as the river rushed free down the gorge, sweeping the obstructing logs loose with its storm-born strength, two lost souls swirled in the torrents, cradled by the waters, until at last their earthly forms reunited in the river as the mother and son they had always been, and would always be beyond the boundaries of life.

53 - Keeping a Secret

Why was Nuka such a poor specimen of lionhood?
Why didn't Scar choose him as his heir?
Why did Zira mate with a different lion when she so admired Scar?
Why do Zira and Scar look so much alike?

A little pet theory of mine. To be read from top to bottom.
(And yes, I do realize that this means Kovu and Kiara are related to each other again.
But now at least they are half first cousins once removed. XP Poor inbred lion prides.)

98 - Puzzle

"Tayu's your son? But then...he's my brother..."

Thought: Could Tojo have been related to Kovu? His mother has the right coloring. See this picture: TojoMother.jpg (The brown lioness next to Sarabi.) Tojo and his mother were drawn in Sketcher and the rest is Photoshop.

I've also made some design changes to Tayu, father of Kovu, because I've decided Kovu and Vitani were littermates and had the same father. Now he resembles both of them. He looks far less like a Kovu-clone when viewed larger, but in this pic... >< See Tayu's character entry for more info on my version of Zira's one-time mate and lieutenant of Scar.

64 - Multitasking

(Why is it that guys wince whenever you mention babysitting?) ;)

"Kiara says she wants to go out on the hunt with us today," Vitani announced. "Since the older lions are out on a scouting party, one of you lucky fellows gets to be cubsitter for the next few hours..."

"Uh, I have kingly duties to be... er... doing," Kovu hurriedly said.

Vitani glanced at Denge. He flinched. "Oh no. You can't be serious, Mom..."

Denge is my character, adopted from Totoma. I'm not sure why the age difference between he and Kovu's cubs is so great...maybe this is Kovu's second litter? Hmmm.

60 - Rejection

The hyenas approached the fallen lion, licking their lips.

"What, was the cub not enough for you scavengers?" snarled Scar. "Get back to your lands before the bird sounds the alarm." But the trio continued to slink towards an easy meal.

Scar suddenly lunged. He crouched between them and the fallen king. "Go!" he growled. "Now." And the hyenas, facing his blazing and furious gaze, reluctantly turned to leave.

Scar may have "removed" Mufasa to gain the throne, but I'd like to think he still held a measure of respect, maybe even love, for his brother after death. Enough so to keep the hyenas from his body.

8 - Innocence

When Scar told Simba to come to the gorge for a surprise, Mheetu had wanted to go too.

"Play with Nala or something," said Simba.

"This surprise is just for the prince, Mheetu." Scar gently told him.

But Mheetu followed, even though he knew the lionesses would come looking for him. And he had seen...everything.

------

Mheetu was created as Nala's little brother but was cut from The Lion King. A very early storyline had an older Simba coming to the gorge to save Mheetu, who had been lured there by Scar. But what if it had happened the other way around? Entry for the "So you want to change the world?" contest.

21 - Vacation

"They say it goes on forever, Dad?"

Tojo's wanderings with his sons lead them eventually to the ocean. Tojo is a canon character from a comic along with his six bird pals, who I have now revised in my version to African crowned eagles. The cubs are my own adopted characters, Konya and Kennen--they have different mothers.

46 - Family

"Run. Run away, Scar, and never return."
What if Scar had agreed to Simba's terms at the end of the movie instead of fighting? I'm sure he would have had followers. And in another land, they might have lived out their lives together in peace.

For the sitewide "Decisions" contest. Features Scar, Zira, Kovu, Vitani and a healthier Nuka. The young lionesses by Nuka are Dotty and Spotty, and the three in the background are Scruffy, Chippy, and Digger, all of whom can be found in the second movie. PNG version: 46Family.png

Disney movie gone WAY wrong. D:

Battling the stranger had aroused Simba's most basic instincts--among them, the urge to kill. And when the lioness moved in toward the prey, he lunged to get there first. For so long he had been deprived of sweet, meaty flesh, and he was not about to be robbed of the prize. It was his!

For "The Really Wild Show" contest. Unfortunately, this is what you usually see when you flip on an Animal Planet feature about lions... *sobs*

68 - Hero

The lion snarled at Nala--and sprang!

Nala braced herself for the crash. But the lion sailed past her. Nala whirled.

"A-HEE-EE-EE-EE!" A great buff-colored hyena screeched and lunged for Nala. His bone-crunching jaws were open. His razor-sharp teeth were bared.

"No!" Nala screamed.

The strange lion slammed into the hyena and sent him flying. The hyena screeched again and landed on his back.

The lion tumbled once and jumped up. "Run!" he roared at Nala. He streaked past her and roared again, "Run!"

Babu looked down at his young cousin, who was listening intently. "You know," he said, "there's nothing wrong with skipping out on your parents now and then. They did it themselves when they were cubs...they just don't want you having any fun."

Boga smirked as she listened. Kopa might be gone, but there were still two-thirds of the trio left to pass on their legacy.

51 - Sport

"The rumors mention hyenas on the borders, be sure to check on that, Zazu...What's going on back there?"

"Merely a...'lesson', sire. Please continue."

Also for the Trading Spaces contest. What if Mufasa was the proper, responsible one and Zazu a bit more mischevious? It's a Zazu-themed picture in honor of the Bird Bonanza. Edit: Wow, this is the first time one of my pictures has placed in the top ten in a site contest! #6! Thank you to all who voted for me. :D

44 - Two Roads

Malka visits the Pridelands when he hears of Simba's return, and runs into...Timon's border patrol.

I tried for the KISS principle on this one...just one brush, one color, one layer. Turned out pretty good. I also like my new adult design for Malka. I'll have to do it in color sometime.

74 - Are You Challenging Me?

Malka, a cub from a neighboring pride, is making an impression on the Pridelander ladies, and Simba is none too happy about it. Malka and Tama (girl with a hair tuft) are from comics, and Kula (lying down) is from TLK6NA.

One of my 100-picture challenge things that I designed especially for the site contest. I nearly died when the file became corrupted the first time I drew it and I lost everything (!!!) but I got back in the ring and finished it before the contest ended. :) I think it actually turned out better, anyway. Comments (or even votes) are greatly appreciated; I'd love feedback on this one.

6 - Break Away

This is actually a request from Blazing Black Mage for the character Eusinabluu that I've taken forever to get to (sorry!) but I really enjoyed doing. Also for the hundred themes challenge. It just sort of got bigger and bigger. And I hope it's okay that I did Zazu in there too, because it felt a bit lonely with just Eusinabluu in that wide open bg. I like this picture. :)

Kiara's younger brother Etana was well-intentioned, but not always the most helpful. And he could be annoying at times.

Created especially for the contest (I'd love your vote!), and for my 100 theme challenge. Occurs between when Kiara leaves Pride Rock and when we next see her. (Etana is my character, adopted from TheUnknownSoul.)
