On-Topic Critters That Are NOT Lions

Occasionally I like to draw something that is not a furry and dangerous carnivore... =)

Albino:

(some kind of prosimian. i was fooling around with the smudge tool in photoshop... the more i look at him (or her) the more i like him. no wonder our ancestors thought that white animals were from the otherworld! this little guy seems to be very tiny -- or else that's a huge buggy!!!)

egyptian vulture.
this is the birdie whose image was used by the ancient egyptians to make the heiroglyph for the sound "ah". if you have ever had your name translated into heiroglyphs, you may have seen it. the most amazing thing about this bird is that it uses tools! it drops rocks on ostrich eggs to break them open. this bird ranges from sub-sahran africa, to southern europe, through the mideast and onto india. sadly, this small vulture is endangered.

Aardwolf. (For Spazzeh -- for suggesting the idea!!!). A nice little insectivorous carnivore that eats mainly temites, bugs, and carrion -- kind of like timon and pumbaa. The aardwolf is related to the more aggressive hyena. because it mimics the look of a hyena, most animals tend to leave it alone, because, unless you are Mufasa, who wants to mess with a hyena?

It's been driving me crazy that i could not draw a decent cheetah, especially after TUS proclaimed this "cheetah" week. So this (my first cheetah pic ever) is for you, TUS, and also for the coolest tlkfaa cheetah around, fimba fwo-fail. =D

Ok, this was SUPPOSED to be a banded mongoose (done in sketcher) but now it might be a ground squirrel or a numbat. I haven't decided.

i have been under some really horible stress lately...& drawing birds is kind of relaxing. (it must be all the feathers...) so here's another little birdie for ya'll: the Variable Sunbird

These little guys are Africa's answer to the hummingbirds of North America. They have jewel-like colors, they feed on small bugs and nectar, but they don't hover...(leastways, i don't think they do...)

(started in sketcher & fnished in photoshop...)
7/10/2007 -- deliniated the flowers a little better. they were a little fuzzy...

Crowned Crane.

I did most of this in sketcher, but i messed around with the feathers and background a bit in photoshop. the anatomy is a bit off. he's too fat.

another little african birdie. this is a malachite kingfisher. i found out that lucky was having a contest an i kind of like birds, but i only had two hours to do this picture, so i ran out of time by 15 minutes. Oh well. cest la vie.

bird was drawn entirely in sketcher again. background was added in photoshop.

Another sketcher birdie. This time it's a Bee-Eater sitting on an acacia branch, and I'm pretty sure it's on model and on-topic. The background was added in photoshop.

I was TRYING to do a crested eagle (found south of the sahara) and i got carried away and added all the purdy blue and purple feathers. (they are NOT blue...they are the regular raptor colors..) so now my birdie looks like a cross between a crested eagle and a blue budgie.

all done in sketcher - even the silly colors. the bg was added in photoshop. O_o

Wildebeest:
For the same scene that the impalas are in.
(I am afraid that after watching "The Wild" I will never look at wildebeest quite the same way. I use to admire them for their long and dangerous migrations. Now, i keep thinking that maybe they're not bad dancers...)

Impalas:
A study for a picture i am doing. i uploaded the picture yesterday, but the background herds looked like stick-figures, so i knew that i would have to create them from scratch and not do a rush job. since I am very pleased with the forground, the bg should look good too.

Lycaon pictus, African Wild Dogs (Cape Hunting Dogs or Painted Wolves...) These are very graceful & slender predators who hunt in a pack so they can tackle very large prey animals such as Cape Buffalo & Wildebeast.
I think I made their noses too chunky.
Ah well...
This sketch is a quick study for a picture I am doing.
