After reading about Timira/Kirijah in the Unnofficial TLK Character Encyclopedia, I thought I'd make a design for her.

Since I could only find a meaning for "Timira", I decided to stick with that name, and have her design reflect it. However, there seem to be two possible meanings for "Timira": either "inferno" or "darkness, obscurity". After some thought, I decided to give her fur like a gray storm cloud and fiery orange eyes. Her dark ears are inspired by some concept art of cub Nala.

I think this design makes her an interesting contrast to my latest version of Chaka, which gives him bright gold fur and emerald eyes (and his name means "blazing sun").

More fun with Malka. In my first picture of him, I joked that because of his ear tufts, his dad must have been a caracal, as biologically impossible as such a thing would be. Then Takabsessed expanded on that idea, and I in turn had to draw my version of an adult Malka that was half caracal.

In fact, if you look at him in a certain way, the ear tufts aren't the only caracal-like trait he had: he also has a tail tuft lighter than his mane tuft, reddish-gold fur, and he keeps straying from his pride, as if the solitary habits of his father's species were already starting to effect him.

(No, I'm not serious about any of this.)

Adolescent Vitani, because I don't see many pictures of her at this age. The plants are flax flowers, and I included them since "flax" is one of the meanings of "Vitani" in Swahili. I doubt Disney intentionally gave a blue-eyed lioness a name associated with blue flowers, but that certainly is a fun little coincidence.

Speaking of name meanings, I recently discovered that Chaka (who was originally part of the SP script and most likely Kiara's brother) was actually meant to have a mate betrothed to him (!) named either Timira or Kirijah. Though I couldn't find any meaning for Kirijah, Timira is a Sanskrit word meaning "darkness", but there's also a male Indian name, Timir, meaning "inferno". :/

(Now where's all the Chaka+Timira art?)

I've seen Vitani's color-changing eyes discussed in various places (they are red-orange instead of blue during the branch-lighting scene). What I haven't seen discussed very much is that other characters' eyes change from red to blue -- this happens with Zira, Nuka and even Simba. To make matters worse, there will occasionally be scenes when one character's eyes are blue while the other's are still red, and vice-versa!

Zira must have some kind of weird chromosome that causes her eyes to change color like that, and Vitani inherited an "inverted" version. And since Simba also has the same trait in SP, that might mean that he...is...Vitani's...

No. No, I'm definitely not going to go there.

Of all the TLK characters we see grow from youngsters into adults, Simba and Vitani are the ones that undergo the most extreme design changes. Vitani gains ear rims while Simba loses his, Simba's cheeks go from smooth to fluffy, while Vitani's go from fluffy to smooth; Simba's eyebrows go from scruffy to smooth while Vitani's go from smooth to scruffy...and the list goes on and on.

So here's the two of them pondering what they'll look like when they're adults, unaware what the future really has in store for them.

(Kobb and Koraden have already done this sort of thing, but I thought I'd give it a shot myself.)

I've done several group pictures of various lions recently, so I thought I'd do a group picture of the most common feline species in the TLK universe besides lions -- cheetahs.

These are all of the known cheetah characters in the TLK universe (with single examples for nameless characters of which more than one appear, like the cheetahs in the TLK game). I would have included a guide to the characters in this picture, but decided I didn't want any text cluttering up the picture. I am uploading another picture which names each of them, though.

I don't think I've drawn Malka since the very first picture I drew of him back in 2006, which showed him as a cub and my interpretation of what he might be like as an adult.

I decided to draw him as an adolescent, transitioning into a slightly different adult design.

In the "Create a lion cub" section of SP Active Play, Kiara sometimes remarks that the cub you're making looks like her cousin.

I thought this comment was pretty interesting, but then Photobucket user Silver-3 suggested that the cousin in question might be Mheetu's cub, something which I hadn't considered before, so I eventually ended up drawing this.

And speaking of Kiara, here's a bit of random insanity that I put together and didn't upload here because it contains screenshots.

This picture is just a placeholder. Click here to see the actual piece.

This is a little guide to 3 of the "official" alternate universes of TLK: the movies, the books/comics, and the computer games. Since there are some serious discrepancies between the 3, instead of trying to reconcile all of those differences, I created 3 different scenarios (with one splitting into 2 alternate futures).

I also discovered that one alternate name for Chaka (Simba's son [and Shani's/Kiara's brother] in the movie universe) was Naba, according to the Unofficial Lion King Character Encyclopedia.

I guess I could've included the musical, TLK 1.5 and the Timon & Pumbaa TV series...but I didn't.

Yes, it's yet another one of these things!

It's another collection of lionesses from the SP Mouseworks storybook, scans of which were generously provided by Takashari (which you can view here). This batch of characters includes both Pridelanders and Outsiders (I don't why I was calling them Outlanders all these years when they're really called Outsiders), plus a couple of corrections I had to make now that I have higher quality scans to refer to.

Some doodles of Vitani and Tanabi that I was compelled to do recently. This is what most of my sketches look like when they're unfinished.

As I was drawing these two, I started contemplating why I had them become an "item" in Simba's Pride: The Road Less Traveled. I hypothesized that it was probably because both of them are unusual in various ways, and because of this, they slowly became friends. I don't think I had this in mind when I was writing the story, but it's interesting to notice it now.

Most of us are familiar with "Dotty", "Sly-Eye", "Scruffy" and the rest of the unique Outlanders in Simba's Pride...

But what about the Outlanders featured in the various Simba's Pride storybooks? There are quite a few of them, and lots of them are even more unique than the ones in the movie. Here are just a few of them, which I found in the following scans:

Three more lions from the Simba's Pride Active Play game. The two on the left are a bit of a mystery, since the mother appears in the intro, the cub appears in the credits, but neither of them appear in the Lion game. I'm guessing that they are mother and son, even though their colors don't match exactly.

The lone cub on the right is from a demo of the game. He looks even more like the cub Nuka beanie tag than the cub I mentioned in my previous Active Play picture.

I also made this picture so I could post a link to a gallery full of screenshots from the game for those of you who are interested - SP%20Active%20Play/

Disney's Active Play: Simba's Pride features a number of lion cubs and their mothers. The cubs have designs that throw the TLK design "rules" right out the window: None of them have whiskers and some don't even have different colored fur around their eyes -- and their moms' designs break the rules even more!

Though Simba's generation is packed full of semi-canon cubs, Kiara's only has four cubs, all from TLK6NA. Even though this game seems to take place in a strange alternate universe where everyone is perfectly fine with letting Kovu and Kiara play together, I think it's neat to finally find some more cubs Kiara's age.

Many, many thanks to Takashari for helping me obtain screenshots and DJ Coulz for making me aware of this game.

"Look, Uru -- the golden one looks just like you."
"And the dark one looks just like you."
"He's got your nose, though."

I decided to draw the quintessential pre-TLK family portrait in order to further my mission to destroy the misconception that Ahadi is described as having golden fur in TLK:6NA. ;)

And yes, I've changed Uru's design yet again. I'm not sure if her father could still be "the selfish lion" in this scenario, since it might mean that her mom was also golden with an Outlander nose, unless she got one or both of those traits from a grandparent. Maybe I should've given her a normal nose and had Taka's nose be inherited from his maternal grandmother, but ah well.

Simba's cousins from the comic "An Unusual Choir" having some fun with an African spurred tortoise. They only appear as babies in the comic, so I decided to draw cub versions of them. The cubs' genders aren't made clear in the comic, and I decided to make them both girls. Though their parents are clones of Mufasa and Sarabi, their fur is very scruffy, so I made sure that their cubs were somewhat scruffy as well.

Since their color schemes are somewhat generic, I tried to give them as many unique traits as possible to set them apart from their pride full of cub Simba clones. (You may notice that the gold cub resembles their mother while the tan one resembles their father.)

The TLK fan fiction "A Safe Place" inspired me to draw Simba and Nala's "original" cubs, Shani and Chaka.

Here, Chaka is supposed to be the cub at the end of TLK, while Shani has the same scruffy head she has in the early SP storyboards (and unsurprisingly resembles Kiara somewhat). I tried to incorporate features from both their parents and grandparents in their designs, as well as a couple of unique traits.

I've seen many people redrawing old pictures to see how they've improved since then, and I've sometimes speculated about doing this myself. For a while, I was never sure which old picture I could do and when I could find time to do it, then recently I realized that I've been on this archive for almost ten years now.

In light of this, I decided there was no better time to redraw the first picture I submitted to the archive. Sure, it's a few months early, but I figured, why not?

Also, even though I haven't drawn Tanabi with that little orange nose gradient for years, I decided to revive it here, because I thought it looked cute.

Kovu, Nuka and Vitani with the designs of their beanie versions. I also find it amusing that Vitani has more of a "mane" than either Nuka or Kovu.

Speaking of these beanies and their tags (near the top of this page), I'm growing convinced that whoever drew the tag for Nuka used only the cub Nuka beanie as reference. The picture on Vitani's tag also looks a little odd, but Kovu's looks perfectly normal, probably because the image of him was copied from a piece of clipart.

Of all the semi-canon characters I've drawn, none of their designs have changed quite as drastically as my designs for Ahadi and Uru. In fact, over the years, their designs have slowly "evolved" into ones completely different than their initial looks. Simba's look changes considerably as he grows up, and so does Nala's. In a way, the changes in their looks reflect the changes in their personalities, showing that they are quite different than the innocent cubs they once were.

However, Kovu and Kiara's designs hardly change at all. Sure, they develop adult proportions, but the only real difference between cub and adult Kovu is his mane. Additionally, except for Kovu's surprisingly fleeting "must kill Simba" mentality, their personalities don't seem to have changed all that much either (insert Kiara joke here).

So I thought, why don't I tweak Kiara and Kovu's designs to make the change from cub to adult just a bit more dramatic (though not quite as drastic as Vitani's metamorphosis)?

A cold-blooded canon character acts as my mouthpiece for a few piffling matters.

I was reading the comments of a video documenting the known TLK family tree, and was a little disheartened by some of them. There were comments like, "Kopa isn't dead! I've seen pics of him as an adult!", "Kovu's dad is Ni, not a rouge!", and "You forgot Kovu and Kiara's cubs! They have three - Lari, Mo and Kirli!"

In the name of all soft, cuddly mammals everywhere, please try to distinguish between fan creations and official material, people. Theorizing about these things is just fine, but there is a line between fanon and canon, though it's often a very thin one.

(Don't worry, there are less whiny pictures coming up.)

I'm sure most of us are familiar with Tojo, Malka and Tama by now (for those of you that aren't, they are characters from a series of TLK comics).

However, there are several lion characters (both cubs and adults) in the comics that are nameless. Some of these characters have been drawn before, but I've never seen them all depicted together.

This picture and the one that follows depict and describe just about all the characters from TLK comics that either have no names (like the lionesses at the end of "The Orphan Birds") or have no implied relation to any characters that are named (like Malka's mother from "Simba's New Brother" and Simba's aunt and uncle from "An Unusual Choir").

Part 2.

By the way, rather than coloring the characters with the same colors they have in the comics, I adjusted the comics' brightness, contrast and RGB values until the color of cub Simba from the comic matched the color of cub Simba from a screenshot from the movie. In other words, if the comic characters appeared in the TLK movies, these are roughly what their colors would be (obviously, I didn't need to do this with the cubs in the previous picture, since they all have either Simba or Nala's colors).

More toying around with the looks of Vitani and Kovu's unknown parents and grandparents, with a cheap, retro-looking background.

A couple of people have made the dark lioness in Tojo's comic Tojo's mother, and since Chumvi is dark too, I thought, why not draw the three together as a family?

As for Zira's parents, I might have made her father a bit like a male version of her*, though he does have a few traits Kovu inherits, while his mate has some of Vitani's characteristics.

Incidentally, I think designing parents for canon characters whose parents are both unknown and/or unnamed would be a great contest idea.

*Speaking of which, I borrowed the "dorsal stripe continuing into the mane" idea from AnnieHyena's sketch of male Zira.

A minor revelation I touched on in the description of a previous picture:

A lot of artists (myself included) draw Ahadi as he was described by the author in A Tale of Two Brothers rather than as he was depicted by the illustrator -- that is, drawing him with a black mane and green eyes instead of a brown mane and red eyes.

However, just about everybody draws him with bright golden fur...yet he is never described as having golden fur in the book. Even the illustrations show him with a caramel-colored pelt rather than a bright golden one.

So, for all we know, Ahadi and Uru could have had color designs roughly like this.

Another cheetah from the TLK canon universe: the one from "The Brightest Star", identified only as "Cheetah."

On the journey all the animals of the Pridelands were taking to the source of water that Mohatu found, a zebra knocked Cheetah down, and then, "All the animals behind Cheetah ran over him on the way to the Great River."

No really, that's exactly what it says in the book.

And as if being trampled by hippos, giraffes, elephants, rhinos and other big things with hooves (yet recovering almost completely within hours) wasn't bad enough, the artist can't even keep his design consistent. He either acquires or loses a design feature on every single page.

An idea that struck me upon seeing a picture of Swifty/Plus-vite/Faster the cheetah cub, who appears in a story from a Lion King magazine. I started thinking about Beba, the cheetah cub from TLK:6NA ("A Snake in the Grass"), and this scene popped into my head.

Expanding on a previous idea: After the selfish lion was driven out of the Pridelands, he lived a hard life on the land's borders in the company of a female outcast. Their situation became even worse with the arrival of Uru, but "Selfish" refused to beg for mercy from Mohatu, thinking that the king would never do such a thing after the troubles "Selfish" caused him.

Ahadi met Uru as a cub and they became friends, meeting in secret as they matured. When their parents eventually catch them together, Mohatu grows angry with "Selfish" and he orders him and his family out of the Pridelands, but Ahadi intervenes, and not wanting to tarnish his father's otherwise pristine image, he leaves this little historical detail out of Mohatu's story. ;)

I tried to combine every physical trait displayed on canon/semi-canon lion characters into one individual. I'm sure I overlooked a few and gotten some of them wrong, but this is the majority.

Some of these traits are common on fan characters (head tufts, elbow tufts, dorsal stripes), but some are rare (toe color surrounding the paw pad, tiny pupils, atypical eye shapes). If I'm given a textual description of an art request, sometimes I slip in some of these more subtle traits to make the characters a bit more distinctive. Even a plain character can be made into a unique one by giving it a few of these traits. Don't be afraid to try them.

I suppose an "experiment" like this is rather timely, with February 12th being Darwin Day.

Reprising a topic from an older upload in this folder: Uru is often made Mohatu's daughter since he is dark in color, she is often perceived to be dark as well, and it's never officially stated whether Mohatu is Mufasa's paternal or maternal grandfather.

I thought I'd be a rebel and toy with the idea of Mohatu being Ahadi's father (supporting the patriarchal monarchy of TLK 1) and the selfish lion from "The Brightest Star" being Uru's father, creating mates for them with traits that will manifest in their children and grandchildren.

My tablet's cable was ailing, so I had to send the entire thing to Wacom to be repaired. Thus, this picture was mouse-drawn. Looks like my mouse-drawing skills haven't diminished that much.

Here are most of the Chakas of TLKFAA, a follow-up to the "multiple Shanis" picture. Similarly to the Shanis picture, only Chakas in some way related to canon characters are included. 6 Shanis and 6 Chakas are described as offspring of Kiara and Kovu, while 8 of the Shanis and 13 of the Chakas are designated as Simba and Nala's cubs.

Note: Chaka was Kiara/Shani's brother, who was cut from SP in its early stages. There are no "official" sketches of him, unlike Shani.

Also, I wasn't sure about the parents of Ukuelukile's Chaka, but I assumed they were Simba and Nala. EDIT: And it turns out that they are.

I'm currently working on about three large art-related projects, and my motivation to work on any of them was running a bit low. Then suddenly, I was inspired to do one of my rare "group surprise" pictures.

A lot of characters have named "Shani" have been popping up lately, and I decided to draw most of the Shanis I found on the archive as cubs (However, I only included ones that were female and had some connection to canon characters). All the artists' names appear next to their versions of Shani, as well as descriptions of how that Shani fits into the TLK universe. Some people theorize that Mohatu is Uru's father (and not Ahadi's) since he has dark colors and it's often speculated that Uru's fur is dark too, since she is Scar's mother.

However, the selfish lion from "The Brightest Star" (where Mohatu appears) has dark fur too...AND he looks a heck of a lot like Scar.

So here's a theoretical father-daughter portrait. I've changed my version of Uru yet again, since I never can decide on one specific design. (credit for this idea goes to Kristin O., who named the selfish lion Onevu.)

Some of the discussions that inspired my TLK hypocrisy picture also inspired this idea:

If Kovu and Vitani are from the same litter, their father would ideally have a dark pelt and blue/teal eyes. Chumvi and Tojo have a dark pelt and blue eyes, respectively, so it seems like one of them might be an ideal candidate. However, if Chumvi were their father, the question of where Vitani's eye color came from would come up, while if Tojo were their father, it wouldn’t be clear where Kovu got his dark colors.

But what if Chumvi and Tojo were brothers? If they were part of the same gene pool, the idea of either one of them siring Kovu and Vitani seems somewhat more plausible.

Just an idle rant and an excuse to draw more canon art.

On this archive, I've seen prehistoric versions of the TLK characters as well as South American and European versions. However, I don't think I've ever seen any North American versions...so here is The Mountain Lion King.

Naturally, Simba and Co. are mountain lions, Zazu is a roadrunner, the hyenas are coyotes (I didn't realize the resemblance to the famous Warner Brothers duo until later), Rafiki is a raccoon, Timon is a black-tailed prairie dog and Pumbaa is a white-collared peccary. This version of the story takes place in a semi-desert habitat in Arizona, and Rafiki has a prickly pear fruit, a hawk's feather and a turquoise tied to his stick.

I didn't think I'd draw anything for "Canon Week", but I decided to draw Zazu just the same.

I'd also like to the this opprortunity to stress that anyone who is interested in an art trade with me or a request should please read what it says in my Artist Comments box, particularly the line that says "Please check out my Artist Profile for more info about me, art requests, and other miscellaney."

Thanks.

(And as long as I'm in a griping mood, generic one to two word comments make me sad.)

Kopa (Simba's son in The Lion King: Six New Adventures) means "ace of hearts" in Swahili, and Uru (Mufasa and Scar’s mother in the same series) means "diamonds". Those two facts eventually inspired me to draw this.

A few months ago, I started thinking about yet another alternate TLK universe, one where the cub at the end of TLK wasn't Kiara or Kiara's brother…

…but her SISTER.

Things took off from there, and now, after all this time, I've got a four-page comic to show for my efforts. I'll be releasing one page per week, ending just before Christmas.

Note: this strip was meant to be a joke. As in, something that is not meant to be serious. So don't try to make sense out of it, because it is merely meant to be funny, nothing more. (I should never spend multiple weeks working on something like this…)

Weaver pointed out some interesting marks Zira has on her ears that I (unsurprisingly) completely overlooked, thinking they were just shadows.

Then I thought, "Hey, I think I'll try incorporating those markings into one of my otherwise fairly bland designs for the next generation of TLK! Let's see, Nani already has Zira's stripe, so I think I'll give Kizazi those markings! He already has the eye shape of his maternal grandmother, so I'll just give him some attributes that his paternal grandmother had too! They'll certainly make him look more unique than those elbow tufts I tried sticking on him a couple years ago!"

Unfortunately, I encountered a little problem while I was coloring Kizazi...

Back when I created Nuala in 1998, I had no idea that there were officially any other cubs besides her and Simba in the Pride. Her brother Mheetu and Kula and Chumvi from TLK:6NA were just the tip of the iceberg. It seems like every few months, a new character from a foreign TLK comic emerges, leaving me to believe that Nala was far from alone when Simba disappeared.

I'm trying out Nuala’s new "slicked-back" look in this comic to see if I like it better than her original look. (Now that I think about it, the unnamed yellow cub from "Shooting Stars" is almost identical to Nuala – yellow fur, a small tuft on the head, belly fur like a female, yet s/he has whiskers...the only real difference between the two is their eye and nose color.)

A young Rafiki gets caught in the act behind Pride Rock. Remember, kids: graffiti is bad.

Accidentally worked a little dynamic element into this drawing: the three characters on the left form a triangle that points towards the fourth character, directing the viewer's eye towards the right.

The lion is Mohatu, whose mate is Winda (from Pridelands: Generations), who I've drawn before. The other mandrill is some nameless non-canon dude, meant to be either Rafiki's tutor or his predecessor.

More sketches of Shani (a very popular name for pseudocanon characters, I've noticed). I just realized that I didn't put those dark ear marks on her in the first sketch I drew of her, and since she's based of the design of the TLK1 cub, she SHOULD have them.

Here's a semi-realistic drawing of her as a cub, a "pure" TLK style headshot of her (still as a cub), a sketchy adult headshot and a colored depiction of her as an adult. She's got brilliant green eyes like Scar (no, she's NOT Scar and Nala's daughter), a nose with tapered corners like Nala, a small pale fringe above it like Sarafina, and a tail tuft that goes from brown to red as she matures, like Simba. She's also got a lot of cub spots as an adult and some weird elbow tufts.

I wanted to try drawing something different, plus I'd been hearing about this Canon Art Month thingy...

...so here's a tiny scribble of Pumbaa. Despite constantly tolerating tasteless jokes made about him, being overcommercialized by Disney, having his intellect ridiculed and having his best friend take credit for his ideas, I'm sure there are moments when even this amiable warthog needs to have some time to himself.

I started thinking how I'm always painting Monah as a tragic figure with an angsty past, troubled present and not much of a future. Then I realized that even for someone like her, there has to be some spark of light in her life that makes her want to keep living...

I spent far too long on this thing. Realism just ain't worth the effort for me. I'd hoped I'd have this picture finished by Christmas...oh well. As long as I'm uploading it now, I might as well post a link to the comic I did to honor that time of the year (it is on-topic, surprisingly).

Part 3. I had a lot of fun designing Mufasa, trying to make him look less like a Simba clone and more like he would look at this stage of his life. Uru and Ahadi were also fun to design (though I think Uru looks a leetle too much like a female Scar. Zira looks original compared to her).

Part 4.

I wanted to do a comic featuring Ahadi telling Mufasa about the Great Kings, and I also wanted to tackle the “Mohatu isn’t Ahadi’s father” concept, so I decided to do both. I’m not in firm support of the latter idea, but I have nothing against it either…I just think it would make things a bit awkward for Ahadi…

(Mohatu’s story is chronicled in <I>The Brightest Star</I>.)

Inspired by the Character Traits contest (and slightly by Peg’s old “Bird King” drawing):

Sketches of all the major TLK characters as African birds with the exception of Zazu, whom I didn’t include, since a bird with a bird advisor seems…well, redundant. I was thinking of making him into a bat, but I eventually dropped that concept.

Sorry if I sound too "lecture-y" in the descriptions. Birds are one of the few things I know enough of to speak confidently about. Sorry about the size too.

Something for the Character Development for Non-Lions contest (where the rules ask for at least 1 non-lion character from the TLK books or movies, and what gets submitted? Non-African species, original characters and…lions! *sigh…*)

Anyway, it’s the two ostriches from IJCWTBK arguing over whether giving these cubs a ride is a good idea. I used to think that Simba’s bird was a female and the other was a male, but now I think they’re both male with slightly different colors.

There are two vastly different canon explanations for Zazu's origin as the king's majordomo. Inconsequential, but certainly enough to really ruin an emotional moment like this.

The climax of the battle at the end of SP in the “Kopa Universe”. When Kiara and Kovu stop the battle, Kopa’s previously hidden anger boils to the surface, making Simba realize what impact his words had on his son so long ago. In this scenario, Simba isn’t the supreme meanie, since his son has a good amount of pointless prejudice towards the Outsiders as well.

I’m setting up the framework for another TLK parallel universe which features Kopa as Kiara’s brother, not Tanabi. Since Kopa is always begging to hear stories, Simba eventually tells him about Scar and the Outlanders. However, he leaves out some details which Kopa tries to tie together. His imagination shapes a vastly different story than the one his father told him, and his overblown fear of the Outsiders eventually turns to anger, which turns into a desire for vengeance.

To Monah, Nani not only resembles Zira physically, but also embodies the playfulness and innocence that Zira had when she and Monah were true friends before she met Scar (also, before she became known as “Zira”.
