Vidole and Kigeni

My first two TLK characters, both lionesses...one has 26 toes, the other has a partial mane...

I honestly don't know if I was subconsciously imitating any particular style when I decided to draw Vidole and Kigeni like this. It's weird, whatever it is.

I included both the colored and uncolored sketch so they would be compared more easily.

I've noticed that a lot of my recent pictures of Vidole and Kigeni (aside from the most recent one) of them have been much different than my early ones. Over time, they've "matured" both emotionally and physically -- they're more like full-grown, semi-mellow lionesses than reckless young adults now. Still, I like to think that they've never really "matured" and I've just been drawing pictures of their less wild moments lately.

On that note, here's the pair as older adolescents, having a good-natured tussle.

I wanted to try something a bit more minimalist and challenging. I used only four layers and didn't use any filters or tweak the colors in any way. The filename is a line from Glass Tiger's "I Will Be There".

I guess this is sort of a Halloween-themed piece...

I decided to swap Vidole and Kigeni's "field marks"*, then I thought I'd draw them in the style of that way creepy "lion" in Coktel Vision's Gobliins.

*a term used by birdwatchers that indicates the most obvious characteristics of a bird to make it easier to identify.

An idea I came up with while I was scanning some MySpace pages full of copied and/or edited art from TLKFAA (including my own).

For at least six years, there’s been a link to a promising looking Space Quest site on the lionking.org members list…but in all that time, it’s been anything more than a “Coming Soon” page.

After all this time, I think it’s safe to say that I’ll never see the actual site. :(

Yes, I’ve sometimes felt tempted to do something like this whenever I’ve gotten this particular specification in various art requests… >:)

V and K are drawn in a slightly realistic style here. They don’t look like lions, but they do look a little more lifelike. I decided to draw them like this because I tend to have minor guilt trips when I realize that I don’t really have a style of my own.

An enlarged version of my new profile picture, which is based on the so-called coats-of-arms of the Middle Ages. Nearly every element of this picture is symbolically linked with my Eastern and Western zodiac signs, as well as my birth month.

*The text is Latin for "Make my day".

Yes, I have finally seen it. And I am quite happy (well, mostly).

(I was seriously considering writing the number on Vidole’s paws on my own hands, but I changed my mind.)

All right, since sooooo many of you asked, the writing on Kigeni's paws is "Don't Panic" in Latin, and the writing on Vidole's paws is the Ultimate Answer in binary. And she's talking about the movie's logo.

Note: I don't have a fursona, just these two lionesses, which usually represent me (Vidole more than Kigeni, though).

Vidole's colors are based on Scar's, no argument there. One of V's unique features is (duh) her extra toes, one of Scar's is his odd paw coloring (it covers his entire palm instead of just the toes). So I decided to let Viddles have both, just this once.

Discovered this really neat "warm-and-fuzzy" effect that I decided to apply to this simple picture of Vidole and Kigeni. (How to do it: Just copy the image to a new layer, blur the bottom layer and change the top layer from Normal to Screen.)

My first photo-manipulation. Credit belongs to my Dad (who took the picture at Shambala, a wild cat refuge). This lioness is named Lily, and the way she was posing on this tree looked so sassy and playful that I just had to make her into Vidole.

Vidole hissing, inspired by a little movie clip I saw of a leopard sniffing the camera while it was rolling for a few seconds, then suddenly hissing and fogging the lens (a little startling, but funny).

Vidole as a gulon. I know she looks like a lynx or a bobcat, but she isn't. A gulon is a mythical (and NOT COPYRIGHTED) beast of Sweden with a cat's body and a dog-like face. Vidole doesn't seem too happy to be such a creature.
